Petals on the Wind (2014) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Petals on the Wind (2014), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Immediately after the events of Flowers in the Attic, Cathy [Rose McIver], Chris [Wyatt Nash], and Carrie [Bailey De Young] escape Foxworth Hall and flee to Clairmont, South Carolina. Weak from the poison that felled Cory and the trauma of captivity, Carrie grows ill on the bus. A mute African‑American woman named Henny [Ellia English] rescues them and takes them to the home of her employer, a 40‑year‑old widower named Dr. Paul Sheffield. At first the children hide their identities, but Cathy is convinced that Paul genuinely cares and might be able to help, so she slowly shares their story.

During their first Christmas with Paul, Cathy begins bleeding profusely during a ballet audition and is rushed to the hospital. Doctors perform a dilation and curettage, but the bleeding is explained as a consequence of irregular periods caused by years of near‑starvation in the attic. Cathy quietly suspects it was a miscarriage tied to her complicated relationship with her brother Chris, yet she tells herself that the past is behind them and that dancing now matters most.

Under Paul and Henny’s care, the children begin to thrive. Chris heads to college and then medical school, while Cathy trains at a local ballet school and eventually earns a place in a prestigious program in New York City. Carrie blossoms as well, but the siblings still carry the weight of Corrine Winslow’s cruelty. Cathy’s memories fuel a growing fixation on revenge, even as she and Paul grow closer and Cathy sustains her dream of a normal life.

As time passes, Cathy falls in love with Paul and they become engaged. Paul shares the story of his late wife, Julia, and the pain of a failed marriage after an affair. Cathy’s happiness is tested when Amanda, Paul’s sister, arrives to challenge Cathy’s sense of reality—she suggests Julia might still be alive and that Cathy miscarried Chris’s child. Devastated, Cathy returns to South Carolina and, driven by a mixture of fear, longing, and determination, marries Julian Marquet [Will Kemp], a man who had long been pursuing her.

Julian proves possessive and controlling, resentful of Cathy’s ties to Paul and Chris. He abuses Cathy, cheats on her, and prevents her from seeing the men who once offered support. He also breaks Cathy’s toes to keep her from dancing. Chris pleads with Cathy to leave Julian, but Cathy learns she is pregnant and resolves to make the marriage work, believing she must honor her vows. A car accident leaves Julian paralyzed, and he dies by suicide soon after.

Cathy gives birth to her son and moves with Carrie and Jory to Virginia, near Foxworth Hall, where she hires Bart Winslow [Dylan Bruce] as her lawyer under the pretense of collecting Julian’s life insurance. Carrie finds solace in a budding romance with a young man named Alex, but the memory of her grandmother’s religious rants shadows her. Carrie attempts suicide after a painful confrontation and reveals how she was frightened by her grandmother’s influence. The tragedy deepens Cathy’s resolve to go after Corrine.

Carrie’s death hardens Cathy’s plan to ruin Corrine and to win back control of her own life, including Corrine’s handsome husband. Even as Chris warns Cathy about crossing lines, she remains determined, and a complicated love triangle with Bart begins to form.

On the night of the annual Christmas Ball, Cathy returns to Foxworth Hall in a gown that mirrors one Corrine wore years earlier. She confronts Corrine with the truth, and Bart escorts her to the library, where their grandmother sits with Corrine. At first, Bart doubts Cathy, but the full confession shifts the room’s balance. Corrine breaks down, claiming she, too, has been wronged, and tries to justify her actions by painting herself as a victim. The confrontation spirals as Chris bursts in, and Corrine suffers a nervous breakdown and sets Foxworth Hall ablaze. Corrine, Chris, and Cathy escape, but Bart and the grandmother, Olivia Foxworth [Ellen Burstyn], are trapped and die in the fire. Corrine is committed to a mental institution.

In the aftermath, Chris drags Cathy from the burning mansion, and he learns that Henny has suffered a stroke and Paul has suffered a massive heart attack while trying to help. Cathy returns to Paul, marries him, and gives birth to Bart Jr. Paul dies soon after, and on his deathbed urges Cathy to be with Chris, who has waited for her all these years. Realizing that Chris has been the one for her all along, Cathy agrees and the two move to California with their two boys, living as the Sheffields. The couple keeps their secret and Cathy confesses that she has been having strange thoughts about the attic, even going so far as to install two twin beds up there.
