The End We Start From

As the relentless storms batter London, bringing with them torrential rains that paralyze the city, a woman’s labor pains escalate, leading to the birth of her cherished child, Zeb. Amid this turmoil, the floodwaters spill across the lower areas of Britain, pushing the nation into a state of crisis as food shortages and urgent housing needs for the displaced surface. With calamity in full swing, the woman and her husband, R, are left with no choice but to leave their home and seek refuge with R’s parents, hoping for security in their ancestral dwelling.

Tragedy strikes when G, R’s mother, meets a devastating fate at the hands of a desperate crowd scrambling for food. The unfolding disaster deepens as R’s father, N, succumbs to despair and takes his own life, leaving R grief-stricken and battling the tormenting memories of their altered reality.

As the woman and R strive to find shelter amidst the chaos, they become separated, with R losing contact with both his wife and child. When marauders invade their temporary safe haven, the woman and Zeb are compelled to flee north, searching for refuge on a remote island along England’s coast. Here, they are swept into a secluded community determined to protect themselves from the devastation affecting the outside world.

Yet, as the initial appeal of this isolated enclave begins to fade, the woman grows increasingly frustrated with the restrictive dynamics of their communal setting. Longing for a deeper connection to life beyond the island’s confines, they ultimately decide to return to their devastated home in London. Much to their relief, they reunite with R, who has been irrevocably changed by the harrowing experiences they’ve endured and the burdens they’ve carried.
