The Princess and the Warrior

Sissi, a devoted nurse in a psychiatric hospital, receives a heartfelt letter from her longtime friend Meike, imploring her assistance in claiming a bequest from Meike’s recently deceased mother. Sissi’s compassionate nature extends to her patients, whom she considers family—this bond is particularly poignant as her own father is among them. However, her sheltered life within the hospital walls means she is largely ignorant of the outside world.

Meanwhile, we meet Bodo, who lives with his brother Walter. Struggling with emotional control, he applies for a job at a funeral home but is dismissed due to his unstable demeanor. Distraught, Bodo resorts to robbing a grocery store, which inadvertently leads to a chaotic chase that culminates in a tragic accident—he strikes Sissi with a truck. In a desperate attempt to save her, he performs an emergency tracheotomy as she lies there unable to speak or breathe. Once Sissi receives medical care, they are separated, leaving her oblivious to his identity.

Following her accident, Sissi becomes increasingly fixated on finding her savior, feeling that her life has been irrevocably altered. A helpful patient friend from the hospital assists her in the search, leading her to Bodo, who is reluctant to form any connections, especially with women. Bodo’s erratic behavior intensifies as we learn he is haunted by dreams of his deceased wife, who tragically died in a gas station explosion while he was in the restroom—a past he struggles to escape.

As Walter, who works as a security guard, devises a robbery alongside Bodo before their planned move to Australia, Sissi unwittingly enters the scene, unaware of their intent. When an alarm goes off during the heist, Walter is shot while Sissi impulsively intervenes to protect the brothers from the security guard. After taking Walter to the emergency room, he imparts his last words to Bodo, urging him to confront his past.

Hiding Bodo at the hospital, Sissi witnesses his emotional breakdown when he learns of Walter’s death, which brings him to the attention of the institution’s head doctor for treatment. During this therapeutic period, Bodo reveals the tragic details of his wife’s death to Sissi, recalling their last heated argument just before the explosion.

In a moment of potential renewal, Sissi confesses her wish for Bodo to join her, sharing a dream where they embody every type of family bond. Yet, complications arise when Steini, another patient obsessed with Sissi, becomes envious and attempts to harm Bodo in a fit of delusion—echoing a past incident where he killed Sissi’s mother.

As tensions peak, Sissi confronts the reality of her mother’s murder and follows Steini to the rooftop, where he contemplates jumping. Denying him that escape, she asserts his life has value, then leaps into the unknown with Bodo, landing safely in a pond below.

The film culminates in a surreal encounter where Bodo confronts the remnants of his past self, symbolizing a significant internal struggle and subsequent growth. In the film’s international cut, we see “old” Bodo, finally at peace, picked up by his brother Walter in an ethereal yet somber reunion in a deserted landscape.

Ultimately, we witness Bodo’s transformation as he embraces Sissi, finding solace at last, as they arrive together at Meike’s coastal retreat, signifying hope and a new beginning for both.
