Azhagi

Shanmugam is a veterinary doctor who lives in the city with his wife Valarmati and their two children. He carries memories of a school romance with Dhanalakshmi that never fully faded. His current life blends everyday duties with a lingering sense of what might have been.

In school, Shanmugam was in love with his classmate Dhanalakshmi. Fate forced them to part when Dhanam was married off to her brother-in-law, Sayaji Shinde. The memory of that lost romance shadows Shanmugam to this day.

Dhanalakshmi has fallen on hard times and now lives on the platforms with her son Balu after the death of her husband. She struggles to make ends meet while keeping her dignity. The sight of her past happiness contrasts sharply with her present poverty.

Shanmugam, unable to secure a job for Dhanam in a friend's house, hires her as their servant-maid. Dhanam moves into the family’s daily routine, bringing back memories that both try to suppress. The arrangement tests boundaries and stirs unspoken tension.

Valarmati learns from Shanmugam's old classmates that they were once in love. She fears that Shanmugam might leave her for Dhanam, which strains their marriage. Her anxiety turns into insecurity that colors every interaction in the home.

Valarmati publicly humiliates Dhanam at a party organized by a friend, driven by jealousy and fear. Dhanam endures the humiliation with quiet dignity. The incident becomes a painful turning point in their already fragile relationships.

Back at home, Valarmati confronts Shanmugam about the past and his loyalties. A fierce argument erupts, revealing the cracks in their marriage. Dhanam overhears the quarrel and goes to bed, withdrawing from the scene.

The next morning, Dhanam and Balu are nowhere to be found. Shanmugam searches the house and finds a letter from Dhanam explaining that she wants Valarmati and Shanmugam to be happy and that she does not wish to come between them. The note quietly refuses conflict, but it leaves a deeper ache in its wake.

Valarmati realizes the truth of the situation and decides to mend things by bringing Dhanam back and asking for forgiveness. She resolves to restore peace rather than fuel resentment. The family begins to seek a path toward reconciliation, though the future remains delicate.

Shanmugam searches high and low and finally finds Balu in an orphanage. He learns that Balu has been living apart from his mother and wishes to reunite with his foster father. The discovery rekindles hope that a complete family could still be possible.

The matron explains that Balu’s mother left instructions that he should stay at the orphanage until she returns. Balu tells the matron that he wants to go with Shanmugam and live in their house. He asks that his mother be told that he is safe with them.

Balu, though adopted by Shanmugam, continues to call him Sir rather than Father, illustrating a respectful but evolving bond. The relationship deepens as Shanmugam takes on responsibility for Balu’s welfare and well-being. He remains determined to locate Dhanam despite the new family ties.

As Shanmugam leaves the orphanage to return home, he reiterates that he is still searching for Dhanam’s whereabouts. The journey to reunite the broken circle is ongoing, and the future remains uncertain. This moment marks a turning point rather than a conclusion.
