The film opens with Ramesh, a medical representative, sharing his past with his fiancée, Sandhya, during a lunch with their friends just before the wedding. The group—Chandran, Gopi (Chithappa), Moorthy, and Bala—lives together in a rented Kodambakkam house owned by Annachi. They dream of becoming filmmakers while working as assistant directors to get by, but a film union strike snarls their finances. To survive, Moorthy takes on modeling jobs for very little pay, and they even hustle as mascots at MGM Dizzee World. In a sly bit of trickery, they feign plans to cast Annachi as the lead in their film just to dodge paying the rent.
Meanwhile, Nandhini’s father—a powerful and intimidating businessman—presses for an arranged marriage to Aravind, a software engineer living in the United States. Nandhini, who has grown wary of marriage and men after her mother’s death, refuses the match and seeks help from Ramesh. Ramesh turns to Chandran, who agrees to help after seeing her distress. He convinces Aravind that he’s in love with Nandhini to derail the wedding, but Aravind isn’t fooled. Nandhini also claims she loves Chandran, which makes Aravind pause the arrangement—yet her father pushes ahead and arranges a new, even less desirable match with an illiterate liquor-shop owner.
Aravind later meets Chandran and Nandhini again, and to keep the ruse alive, Chandran pretends to be Nandhini’s lover. Believing the act, Aravind arranges a marriage registration for them. Nandhini asks Chandran to register “their” marriage temporarily, and he reluctantly agrees. When her family discovers the sham, they attack Nandhini and Chandran, but Aravind intervenes. Nandhini’s father cuts ties with her, and Aravind offers them shelter in his flat. At a later gathering, Chandran spins a dramatic tale of his supposed love for Nandhini, which shocks their friends; Nandhini reproaches him for taking the lie too far, while Aravind begins to suspect a real bond between them. For safety, Chandran’s friends insist he stay with Nandhini in the flat.
As they spend more time together, Nandhini and Chandran clash often, and Aravind finds himself stuck in the middle. After Aravind returns to the United States, Chandran suggests they focus on being good friends and promises he won’t misbehave, helping Nandhini feel at ease. Chandran discovers that Nandhini misses her puppy, and a goofy mix-up leads him and Gopi (Chithappa) to end up in what they think is a puppy source—but it turns out to be a mistaken stop. They eventually secure a new canine companion for Nandhini. To help her continue her studies, Chandran pays her exam fees after she loses the money from selling her mother’s chain, with a little help from their friends who chip in ₹2000 and Chandran selling his beloved cycle to cover the remaining ₹1000.
Moorthy notices the growing closeness between Chandran and Nandhini and jokes that they look like a real couple. Although Chandran can’t immediately admit his own feelings, he soon realizes he loves Nandhini. Tragedy strikes when Moorthy is badly injured on a serial shoot; as he regains consciousness, he calls out for Nandhini in a bid to reveal Chandran’s feelings, but Moorthy dies before he can say more, leaving everyone stunned.
In due course, Chandran’s story is finally accepted, and a producer agrees to back his first film. True to his promise to Moorthy, Chandran decides to tell Nandhini the truth. He learns, however, that she has landed a job as a systems analyst in Bengaluru and is about to move. Before she leaves, Nandhini asks Chandran to sign divorce papers, and he agrees. As a keepsake, Chandran asks her to leave behind her footwear. When Nandhini finally prepares to depart, she finds Chandran in tears, and her feelings begin to shift. She realizes she loves him, and she embraces him in a tearful, heartfelt moment.
After Ramesh finishes recounting Chandran’s past to Sandhya, the film closes with Chandran, now a successful film director, joining them for a celebratory lunch—with his wife Nandhini by his side.
