Balram, Yashpal Sharma, a devout Hindu living in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, plans a November 2021 pilgrimage to Rameswaram with his wife Janki, Anju Asrani, their daughter Shivani, Preethi Asrani, and their son Sonu, Advaith Vinod. The family embarks on a journey by train, arriving at Madurai Junction on the eve of Diwali, where they hire a cab to reach the sacred town. What starts as a hopeful trip soon tests their patience and limits as Balram’s temper flares during a dispute with the cab driver Kanagu, and the collision that follows leaves Janki gravely injured. The accident triggers a chain of urgent decisions that ripple through the family’s plans and beliefs.
As Janki’s condition deteriorates, doctors insist she must be moved to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for specialized care. Language barriers complicate communications, leaving Balram and his children feeling isolated in a foreign land. A compassionate friend of Kanagu steps in, guiding an ambulance toward the hospital, yet tragedy strikes en route when Janki passes away. Balram, guided by his religious faith, resists the idea of a post-mortem and requests that the family be airlifted home to Ayodhya with Janki’s body, clinging to a hope of a dignified farewell. The airport becomes a tense arena where the truth of the incident is finally explored.
At Perungudi, the authorities investigate the death. Balram and his children are cleared of blame, and the group is escorted to the mortuary for the post-mortem—an ordeal Balram openly resists. Kanagu’s friend, moved by the children’s vulnerability, returns after initially leaving, gathering funds to secure Shivani’s flight and arranging embalming despite Balram’s protests. Shivani, capable beyond her years, rebukes her father for clinging to convention at the cost of her mother’s memory, exposing Balram’s hypocrisy in his desire to see Janki “healed” by legal loopholes. This moment of confrontation softens Balram; for the first time, he allows himself to grieve openly and mourn his wife.
With all tickets to Lucknow booked, Shivani must travel with her mother’s remains, while Balram and Sonu stay behind for the moment. An elderly couple agrees to surrender their seats, enabling Sonu and Balram to join Shivani on the flight home. The twist comes when it is revealed that Kanagu’s friend is Abdul Malik, a Muslim ally who steps in at a critical moment. Balram, moved by Abdul Malik’s act of humanity, sets aside his growing intolerance and offers heartfelt thanks. He and his children ultimately board the flight to Ayodhya, carrying both sorrow and a renewed sense of possibility.
Months later, Abdul Malik continues to embody reconciliation by helping a stranger in Rameswaram perform the last rites for her mother, underscoring the film’s quiet message of compassion crossing religious divides. What begins as a personal tragedy evolves into a story about humility, forgiveness, and the ways in which kindness can bridge deep-seated differences, leaving Balram and his family with a new understanding of faith, family, and humanity.
