Karthikeyan is a photographer-editor for The Indian Express in Mumbai, and Chitra works as a bank employee. Both live in Navi Mumbai, and their paths cross in a seemingly ordinary way that slowly reveals deeper currents in their lives.
On a routine day, Karthikeyan meets Chitra while she opens a bank account, and they notice a familiar sense of belonging, perhaps because they hail from the same locality and share Tamil roots. They bump into each other again on a return train ride, and he kindly offers his seat when she is standing, though she hesitates to accept. When a train strike disrupts their commute, he suggests traveling together in an auto rickshaw to save money, but she declines. The next day, Chitra is wary about riding the same train with him, and Karthikeyan, somewhat exasperated, explains that his only reason for speaking to her was their shared background, and he promises he will never talk to her again. Yet fate, serendipity, and a quiet curiosity pull them back toward each other.
A subsequent turn of events binds them more closely. When Chitra’s handbag is snatched, Karthikeyan steps in to help, accompanying her to the nearest police station. He then invites Chitra to his home to meet his parents, and the encounter goes well. His parents approve of Chitra, and some weeks later his mother asks Chitra to encourage Karthikeyan to consider marriage. When Chitra relays this wish, Karthikeyan opens up about his late wife, Aruna, a woman whose memory weighs heavily on his decisions. The backstory unfolds: five years earlier, Karthikeyan was a police officer in Chennai, part of the bomb-defusing squad. Aruna endures the danger he faces, and though she does not demand that he quit, she fears for his life. While the couple travels to Tirupur for a friend’s wedding, Karthikeyan is recalled to Coimbatore for a bomb defusal. The mission succeeds, but a colleague named Ajay suffers a severe injury, losing a leg. Karthikeyan travels to Chennai to see Ajay, who recounts Aruna’s fears. In response, Karthikeyan quits the police force. When he tells Aruna, she rushes back to be with him, but a signaling error triggers a head-on train collision that takes Aruna’s life. This tragedy pushes Karthikeyan to leave the police behind and start anew in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Chitra opens up about her life in Chennai, where she studied and lived with her brother’s family while seeking employment. Through a series of chance events, she meets Srikanth, a bank officer, and the two fall in love. Srikanth’s Brahmin parents in Ooty oppose the match, but Srikanth defies them and elopes with Chitra. Tragedy strikes again when Srikanth’s mother falls gravely ill, and a cruel truth emerges: his father’s deception leaves Srikanth broken, and he dies in a train accident shortly after. In keeping with Srikanth’s wish and their shared altruism, Chitra adopts Shiva, a baby from the orphanage where Srikanth volunteered.
As life moves on, Chitra’s brother receives a job offer in Singapore, nudging her to consider a fresh start abroad, and she ends up being offered Srikanth’s former position at the bank. With these changes, Karthik’s parents urge the couple toward marriage. Shiva forms a bond with Karthikeyan’s family, while Chitra wrestles with the idea of moving forward with him. Chitra’s mother-in-law ultimately influences the course of events, and the family’s dynamic shifts as they navigate obligation and affection. The tension reaches a turning point when Chitra contemplates a second marriage but remains torn by the responsibilities of her life with Shiva.
A decisive moment arrives at a station, where Chitra plans to reveal her decision to marry Karthikeyan. En route, she encounters her [mother-in-law] again, who invites her to live with the family. This leads to a sequence of choices: Chitra transfers to Ooty to be with her mother-in-law, leaving Karthikeyan uncertain and disappointed when he misses meeting Shiva on a crucial day. Yet the nurturing influence of the mother-in-law becomes clear, and she ultimately urges Karthikeyan to marry Chitra. The path forward unfolds with both families realizing the value of togetherness, and the couple travels back to Mumbai to begin their married life.
In the end, Karthikeyan and Chitra marry, bringing a sense of closure and joy to Shiva and to Karthikeyan’s parents, who have supported the match from the start. The film traces a delicate balance between duty, love, loss, and the stubborn resilience of two people who find a way to build a life together, despite the shadows of the past.
