Anuradha Roy, [Leela Naidu], a celebrated radio singer and dancer and the daughter of a wealthy family, finds her heart drawn to an idealistic doctor, Dr. Nirmal Chowdhary, [Balraj Sahni], who has chosen to devote his life to helping the poor in the distant village of Nandagaon. Nirmal asks Anuradha to step away from the comforts and expectations her father has in mind for her and to embrace the life that his vocation demands. Yet her determination to follow love over security remains unshaken. The father, a powerful figure known as the Zamindar, [Asit Sen], tries to steer the course of their future by arranging a match with the London-returned Deepak, [Abhi Bhattacharya], hoping to secure a more conventional path for his daughter.
After marriage and the arrival of a daughter, Anuradha comes to grips with the gravity of village life. She manages the household, tends to the family, and gradually shelves the singing that once defined her identity. The quiet demands of rural living press on her spirit, and the dream of performing fades as she leans into duty and care. A visit from her father years later brings a reconciliation and a proposal to move the family to the city to be with him, a plan that Nirmal, bound to his patients and his mission, declines for now and promises to consider later.
Meanwhile, Deepak travels with his girlfriend and meets with a car accident, forcing him to seek treatment from Nirmal. Nirmal performs a successful plastic surgery on Deepak’s girlfriend, and Deepak stays with Anuradha for a few days, witnessing firsthand the hardships she endures. He presses Anuradha to leave Nirmal and return to the city to pursue her music once more, reigniting the age-old tension between love and vocation. He hopes she will reclaim her voice and her independence, even as she weighs the costs of departure.
The story builds toward a turning point when the doctor finally concedes to her wish to restart her life in the city. In the climactic moment, Anuradha asks him a pointed question that cuts to the core of her dilemma: > Cannot you ask him to go away? And never come back again? The line crystallizes a difficult resolve, hinting at a choice that could redefine her future. It suggests that, despite the strength of her longing for musical glory, she remains bound to the life she has built with her husband, a union rooted in shared hardship and quiet endurance.
This tale unfolds with a gentle, observational lens, tracing the ripple effects of one woman’s choice between two deeply felt halves of her identity — the luminous world of song and the intimate, sustaining bond of marriage. It is a reflective meditation on duty, passion, and the slow evolution of personal dreams within the constraints of family and community, all anchored by the performances, sacrifices, and quiet resilience of its central characters.
