During the final year of World War II in London, American reporter Sara Scott begins an affair with the British reporter Mark Trevor. She is torn between marrying her wealthy American boss Carter Reynolds or continuing with Mark, and she ultimately chooses Mark, only to discover that he is already married with a son back in his hometown. The lovers part, then decide to stay together and work through the complications their relationship has created.

As the war in Europe winds down, Mark is killed in a plane crash, sending Sara into mourning and into a mental sanatorium for a few months. After her release, Carter convinces her to catch a ship back to New York City and work for him. However, before her departure, she travels to Trevor's scenic seaside hometown in Cornwall and lives for a time with his young widow Kay Trevor and son while she works to fashion Mark's war reporting into a book.

She wrestles with whether to tell Kay the truth about her relationship with Mark, but finally does so, triggering Kay to emotionally break down and order Sara to leave. Yet the two eventually make amends when they meet again at the station, a quiet moment that suggests a fragile, hard-won reconciliation after a tangled web of love, guilt, and the toll of war.

Q1

Why did Sara choose Mark over Carter?

Sara chose Mark because their shared experience as war correspondents in London created a deep emotional connection that she didn't have with Carter. Though Carter offered security and wealth, Sara valued the passion and understanding she found with Mark, believing they could build a meaningful life together despite the uncertainties of wartime.

Foreshadowing: The intensity of London during air raids and their shared dangerous work environment establishes their bond early in the story.
