In October 1941, war correspondents and brothers Jonny Davis and Kirk ‘Junior’ Davis return to the still-neutral United States after being kicked out of Germany. George L. Stafford, the isolationist publisher of the New York Daily Chronicle, refuses to print their dispatch about Japan and Germany’s plans for the world, but Jonny talks him into publishing it anyway—a bold move that ultimately costs him his job.
Back home, Jonny goes to reclaim his old room from friends and landlords Evie Manning and Willie Manning. He’s irritated to discover the space occupied by Paula Lane, an aspiring reporter who wants to work as a foreign correspondent. The room’s occupancy sparks a classic love triangle: Paula captures Jonny’s eye, but his brother Kirk has already formed a connection with her. Jonny’s disposition blends charm with competitive longing as he navigates the shifting affections, hoping Paula might choose Kirk even as his own feelings pull him toward her.
The group eventually reunites in Manila, and as the calendar turns to Sunday, December 7, the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the crisis of war presses in. Jonny urges the others to leave for Australia by ship, but love and loyalty pull them to stay, and they slip back on a pilot boat after he parts from them. Kirk enlists, while Paula joins the Red Cross, stepping into wartime duties that will shape her path and their fates.
As the Japanese invasion tightens its grip on the Philippines, Jonny crosses paths with his brother in the war’s brutal theater. Kirk serves in a detachment under Lt. Wade Hall, tasked with repelling a Japanese amphibious assault. The fighting is fierce, and Kirk and most of the defenders are cut down. Jonny’s grasp of loss deepens as he fears Paula may have perished, especially after the hospital where she worked is struck. In a twist of fate, she isn’t among the casualties but is found safe elsewhere, alive and continuing her crucial aid work.
The story crescendos with Jonny and Paula’s reunion, and in a moment of resolve and storytelling clarity, he guides her to a typewriter and begins dictating the rest of his newspaper dispatch, choosing to honor the truth of their experiences and the war’s toll. This closing arc reveals resilience in the face of upheaval, a testament to personal sacrifice amid global conflict, and a sense that some bonds endure even when futures look uncertain.
