Never Said Goodbye

A heart-breaking romantic tale centers on Jun-ho, Lee Joon-gi, who ends things with his girlfriend Xiao You, Zhou Dongyu, after deciding to return to Italy to pursue his childhood dream of learning opera. The film opens at a lively party where Jun-ho proudly shows his travel tickets to friends, while Xiao You pleads for him to stay. After a bitter argument, Jun-ho breaks up with her and flies back that same night.

In the first half, Xiao You wrestles with the breakup, balancing emotional strain with the pressures of work as interior designers in Shanghai. They had met in university, and Jun-ho—a Korean student raised by his elder sister in Italy—fell for her. Then a shocking diagnosis changes everything: he learns he has brain cancer with only six months to live. He makes the painful choice to end things to spare her the pain of watching him fade. After about three months, Xiao You still cannot forget him, and he fakes his death in Italy with the help of his elder sister, arranging a funeral so she can move on. The ruse, however, backfires in her heart, and her grief deepens as she becomes more emotionally tethered to him in absence.

Her neighbor, Tian Bo, [Ethan Juan], tries to steady her fragile world and the two form a wary but tender friendship. Yet Xiao You’s memories of Jun-ho grow ever stronger, and the unfinished bar project he left behind becomes a faint beacon she clings to. Night after night, a benevolent stranger seems to complete the work, and she begins communicating with this helper through smiley drawings on the wall. The truth emerges when she realizes the mysterious night worker is none other than Jun-ho, who, with the quiet support of his former employer Ma Shuai [Xing Jiadong], keeps his vow to never letting her go. As Jun-ho’s health deteriorates, he faces a major surgery and the possibility that he might die soon. In a final, intimate gesture, he reappears in a bear disguise to bring a smile to Xiao You’s face, ending with a warm hug that preserves the memory of his care.

A year later, Xiao You travels to Italy to visit Jun-ho’s elder sister, paying respects at his grave and reading the daily logs he kept, a quiet record of how he watched over her from the apartment above hers. The film’s title, Never Said Goodbye, grows from that enduring, unspoken vigil and the hope that love can endure beyond farewell.
