Max Baron is a twenty-seven-year-old St. Louis advertising executive who has retreated from life in the two years since the car accident that killed his wife Janey. He drifts through work and social routines with a guarded, almost invisible presence, haunted by loss. On his way to his friend Neil’s bachelor party, he stops for food at a White Palace diner and orders fifty burgers. When six are missing, he returns to the restaurant to complain, sparking a tense exchange with the middle‑aged waitress, Nora Baker. She refunds him and sends him back to the party, but the encounter leaves him unsettled. At a bar later, he encounters Nora again; she is clearly drawn to him, though she jokes and flirts while he remains defensive and distant. After a drink, he gives her a ride home to the Dogtown neighborhood, and a fateful sequence unfolds: a dream of his late wife disturbs him, and upon waking he finds Nora in an intimate moment. They choose to be together that night, and their connection grows into something more than a casual affair.
On the second anniversary of Janey’s death, Max Baron visits Janey’s grave and then watches Nora from a distance at White Palace. He musters the courage to see her again, this time under the pretext of fixing a broken mailbox, but their relationship deepens beyond a secret fling. Nora becomes an anchor for him, softening his mood and adding a sense of warmth to his days, both at home and at work. Yet the romance is complicated by differences in age, class, and social circles, and Nora reminds him of the gulf that still separates them. As they spend more time together, they come to understand that their bond is not just about romance, but about choosing a different life together, even if it means upheaval.
The strain surfaces when Nora learns that Max has lied about attending his friend Neil’s wedding and has kept their relationship under wraps from his family and friends. Their disagreements sharpen around how open they should be about their partnership, and Nora accuses him of hiding because of fear or shame about their social mismatch. Nora’s sister, Judy, offers a candid portrait of Nora’s past, explaining how she and Nora were abandoned as children and that Nora’s own son died when he was young, details that cast a new light on Nora’s fragility and resilience. This revelation tests Max’s commitment and prompts him to confront his own reluctance to let go of his old life.
A pivotal moment comes at Thanksgiving, when Max invites Nora to meet Neil’s wife, Rachel, and the extended circle of friends and their families. The dinner exposes the clash between Nora’s world and Max’s, leaving Nora unsettled and Max defensive about his dual lives. After a heated argument, Nora withdraws, and Max discovers that she has left; a note explains that she has quit, and he is left to reflect on what his life has become. He dives into a period of personal upheaval, losing his sense of place in his routine, and even wandering to New York to search for Nora’s sister Judy, hoping to locate Nora herself. His quest leads him to find Nora waitressing in a city restaurant, and the moment of truth arrives: he confesses his love, reveals that he has quit his job to be with her, and asks her to take a chance on a life together.
The couple reunites in a bold, public moment that seals their decision to be together. In a scene that defies their earlier caution, they kiss and embrace in the bustling restaurant, the patrons cheering as Max clears a table and lowers Nora onto it, choosing to declare their commitment in front of the world rather than behind closed doors. The finale frames their love as a deliberate break from the past: a man who has learned to let go of the fear of judgment, a woman who has survived hardship and abandonment, and two people who choose each other above all else, against a backdrop of a society that often seems poised to judge them.
