Tomorrow Is Forever

In Baltimore, Elizabeth Hamilton, Claudette Colbert and her husband John Andrew MacDonald, Orson Welles, had barely celebrated a year of marriage when John enlisted to fight in World War I. Just before Christmas 1918, Liz is hit with devastating news: John has been killed in action, and to complicate matters, she discovers she is pregnant. Liz leans on the steady support of Lawrence “Larry” Hamilton, George Brent, the owner of the chemical company where she works. After their baby is born, Liz agrees to marry Larry, even though she insists she could never love him the way she loved John. They raise their son, named John Andrew after his father and going by the nickname Drew, with Drew growing up under Larry’s care, and they later welcome a second son, Brian.

By 1939, as the shadow of war grows and Nazi aggression looms, Drew becomes a curious, eager young man who follows world events with growing intensity. An astonishing twist of fate unfolds when John—still very much alive—returns to the United States after two decades abroad, having lived in Europe as an Austrian named Erik Kessler to spare Liz the burden of his presence. He arrives with a young woman named Margaret Ludwig, Natalie Wood, whom he claims is his daughter, though in truth she is the daughter of Dr. Ludwig, John Wengraf; the doctor and his wife were killed by the Nazis.

John, in disguise, takes a job at Hamilton Chemical Works and is soon invited to Larry’s home to discuss work. Liz does not recognize him at first—he has had plastic surgery and an Austrian accent that hides his identity. The recognition finally sinks in when Liz learns Drew’s full name: she realizes the man in her home is her first husband, though John stubbornly denies his true identity and urges Liz to move on with her life. Meanwhile, Drew is anxious to leave for Canada and join the Royal Air Force to resist Hitler, a plan that terrifies Liz because she fears losing him the way she lost John. Yet John’s presence, and the truth about Margaret, begins to soften Liz’s resolve as she contemplates the costs of war and the fragility of the past.

As tensions rise, Liz’s wariness clashes with John’s quiet longing to protect his family while making amends for the years stolen by fear and secrecy. John supports Drew’s dream of service, even as he grapples with the impossibility of confessing who he is. The moment of reckoning seems inevitable when Drew tries to slip away to join the fight, only to be intercepted at a rain-soaked train station by the man who is both his father and his past. John brings him back home, and Liz, torn between memory and hope, pleads for honesty. John refuses, preferring to protect Liz from the pain of a revelation she might not be ready to bear, and he urges her to look toward the future.

The next day, Liz and Larry visit John to thank him for bringing Drew back safe. They find Margaret in tears and learn that John has died. Liz consoles Margaret as the two women prepare to welcome Margaret into their home, unaware of a partially burnt letter still waiting to be found in the fireplace—the quiet, lingering reminder of the unresolved past that hangs over the family and the war years.
