As a young boy, Charlie narrowly escapes the harrowing Armenian Genocide by hiding himself in a trunk that is bound for the United States. Tragically, his family remains behind and becomes victims of the horrific events.

Years later, in 1947, Charlie decides to return to Armenia, hoping to reconnect with his roots. Upon arrival, he quickly realizes that the country is under the oppressive regime of Soviet Communism, which has stifled the spirit of the people.

Charlie's optimism is short-lived as he is arrested by authorities for the bizarre crime of wearing a tie. This nonsensical charge leads to him being imprisoned, marking the beginning of his struggles in this repressive new world.

To punish him further for his so-called cosmopolitan ways, Charlie is placed in solitary confinement. This isolation plunges him into despair, as he grapples with the dark reality of his situation and the loss of his freedom.

Just when Charlie begins to lose hope, he discovers a small hole in the prison wall outside his cell. Thanks to a recent earthquake, he gains a glimpse into a nearby apartment building, which opens up a new world for him.

Through the hole in the wall, Charlie begins to observe the daily lives of an Armenian couple, Tigran and Ruzan. He finds solace in watching them live their lives, sharing meals, laughter, and even tears through his voyeuristic connection.

As he spends time watching their lives, Charlie begins to learn about Armenian culture, something he had been disconnected from for so long. This newfound cultural awareness rekindles a part of him that he thought was lost.

Charlie develops a deep sympathy for Tigran, recognizing the pains of a Soviet Armenian forced to hide his artistic passions. Their shared confinement bonds them in unspoken understanding and admiration despite the bars separating them.
