In 1946, just after World War II, Emilia Maja Komorowska, a Polish woman, returns to her homeland with her ailing mother and begins to rebuild her life amid the physical and moral ruins of postwar Poland. She ekes out a modest living by baking and selling cookies in a crumbling town, tending to her mother’s fragile health while the landscape around them bears the marks of a world at fatigue and transition. Nearby, a U.S. military commission arrives to help exhume the mass graves of Allied pilots murdered during the war; among the team is Norman Scott Wilson, a driver whose presence becomes a catalyst for change in Emilia’s world.
Emilia and Norman meet by chance when he offers her a ride in his jeep. They come from sharply different worlds and do not share a common language, yet a quiet, mutual compassion draws them together, and a tender romance begins to bloom despite the barriers of memory and circumstance. Norman makes regular visits, offering practical help and quiet emotional support, and his companionship gradually deepens Emilia’s sense of possibility. Yet Emilia’s heart remains tethered to her mother, who depends entirely on her care, creating a conflict between personal longing and filial duty.
When Norman receives orders to return to the United States, he invites Emilia and her mother to join him on the journey. The prospect of emigrating prompts Emilia to seek counsel from a priest, Wiesław Michnikowski, and she weighs the dream of a new life against the cost of leaving everything familiar behind. As the days unfold, Emilia’s mother dies—partly revealing the grim truth that the journey may not be possible for both of them—and Emilia confronts the heartbreaking choice that follows. After her mother’s death, she attempts to emigrate, enlisting a local smuggling agent to help her passage. In a moment that defines her sacrifice, only one person can go, and she chooses to spare herself for others by giving the spot to Stella, a neighbor and friend who is also a local prostitute, Ewa Dałkowska, thereby allowing Norman to depart with the other traveler while Emilia remains behind.
Years pass, and the film follows Emilia into an old-age home run by nuns, a place that holds the weight of memory and longing. A letter from America arrives, announcing an inheritance, offering a glimmer of hope that perhaps a second chance might still come. She gathers herself to travel once more, but age and illness overtake her resolve; she becomes physically unable to continue, losing consciousness with a suitcase in her hand, a quiet testament to a life lived between two worlds and two fires of longing.
The story unfolds with a restrained, compassionate sensibility that never sensationalizes the pain of displacement. It centers on the quiet power of choice—the way Emilia, Norman, and Stella navigate duty, affection, and chance—as a witness to the enduring pull of home and the elusive possibility of a new life beyond its borders.
