In 19th century Dublin, we meet Albert Nobbs, an eccentric man in the twilight of his middle age, who serves as a waiter at the Morrison’s Hotel. This establishment is overseen by the notoriously stingy and controlling Marge Baker. Albert is not only hard-working but also prudent, saving up his earnings with the dream of escape—to one day own his own business and break free from the constraints of hotel life. However, apart from his fellow workers, Albert leads an isolated existence, feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness.
Things take an unexpected turn when a new worker, Hubert Page, is brought on by Mrs. Baker to paint a room in the hotel. Due to the circumstances, Mrs. Baker forces Hubert to share a bed with Albert for a single night—an arrangement that sends shivers down Albert’s spine. During their time together, Hubert uncovers the real reason behind Albert’s apprehension about sharing a room. Instead of being deterred by the awkward situation, Hubert encourages Albert to reconsider his life choices. He unveils a path that allows Albert to imagine a future that mirrors his own life, filled with love and partnership, alongside his wife, Cathleen.
In this exploration of newfound possibilities, Albert becomes smitten with his younger, flirtatious co-worker Helen Dawes. However, unbeknownst to Albert, Helen is entangled in a romantic affair with the brusque and cunning Joe Mackins, another one of their colleagues, who has recently joined the staff at Morrison’s. As Albert, Helen, and Joe navigate their complicated web of courtship, Albert starts to realize that what comes easy to Hubert may be far more challenging for him.
Through the twists and turns of their relationships, Albert must grapple with his emotions and confront the complexities of love, companionship, and the pursuit of happiness in a world that often suppresses individuality.
