A Star Is Born

Esther Blodgett is a determined aspiring singer who performs with her band, while Norman Maine, a once-celebrated matinée idol, now faces the decline of his illustrious career. The story begins at the Shrine Auditorium, where Norman makes a drunken entrance that draws the attention of studio publicist Matt Libby, who desperately attempts to prevent him from embarrassing himself on stage. However, in a surprising twist, Norman bursts onto the stage where an orchestra is playing, and Esther seizes the moment, cleverly pretending that he is part of the performance.

Recognizing Esther’s quick thinking that spared him from disgrace, Norman invites her out to dinner and later watches her sing at an after-hours club. He becomes a crucial figure in her life, encouraging her to pursue her dreams of becoming a movie star in Los Angeles. This leads Esther to inform her bandmate, Danny McGuire, that she will be leaving their current gig behind to chase her new aspirations.

In the early hours following their dinner, Norman is called away, but later, he hears Esther’s voice on a television commercial. Intrigued, he makes an effort to find her. The studio head, Oliver Niles, is skeptical about Esther’s potential as a fleeting interest for Norman, yet ultimately agrees to cast her in a minor role after Norman appeals to their shared history. However, when she goes to collect her paycheck, Esther is shocked to find her name has been changed to “Vicki Lester” without her consent. With Norman’s support, she performs for Oliver, and her talent is recognized, landing her a significant role in a musical film that catapults her to stardom. As Vicki’s career ascends, her romance with Norman flourishes, culminating in their marriage.

Despite Vicki’s growing success, Norman’s struggle with alcoholism intensifies, leading to dire consequences for his career. In a pivotal moment during Vicki’s Oscar acceptance speech, Norman, by then intoxicated and irritable, interrupts the event, resulting in an explosive outburst that includes an unfortunate accidental strike against Vicki when she tries to pacify him.

Following this incident, Vicki continues her professional journey while Norman’s situation deteriorates further; he ends up in a sanitarium. During a visit to the racetrack, he encounters Matt Libby again, who taunts him about his dependency on Vicki’s earnings. Following a heated confrontation, Norman succumbs to temptation and embarks on another binge, landing him in jail for ninety days. After Vicki bails him out, they return home, where Norman overhears a painful exchange between Vicki and Oliver, revealing that Vicki is considering giving up her career to take care of him. In that moment of clarity, Norman recognizes the damage his actions have wrought on himself and Vicki. In a tragic resolution, he declares he needs to go for a swim, only to walk into the ocean and take his own life.

At Norman’s funeral, Vicki faces a barrage of reporters and heartless fans, ultimately retreating from public life in profound grief. Yet, encouraged by Danny McGuire, she gathers the strength to attend a charitable event. Upon taking the stage, the master of ceremonies prompts her to share a few words. In a poignant moment, she states, “Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine,” which earns her a standing ovation, showcasing her strength and resilience in the face of heartbreak.
