The narrative centers around Noni, a British R&B singer with mixed-race heritage who faces intense competition and racial prejudice. Now a successful artist in the USA and dating a popular rapper, she grapples with feelings of being used and undervalued. Following a night of celebration where she wins an award, despair drives her to attempt to take her own life by leaping from her apartment balcony.
In a twist of fate, a police officer named Kaz, who is covering for a friend on a bodyguard assignment, intervenes just in time to prevent her fall. Although he initially distances himself from Noni due to his obligation to lie at a press conference, their relationship gradually deepens. With Kaz’s encouragement, Noni finds the strength to stand up for herself, demand better treatment from her boyfriend, and insist that her own songs be featured on her upcoming album.
Summoning her inner courage, she gently ends her relationship with the rapper and embarks on a romantic journey with Kaz. However, during a performance, her ex shows up and humiliates her on stage, prompting Kaz to confront him, which leads to a public altercation that gets caught on camera. This action earns Kaz a reprimand from his father, who fears the repercussions it could have on Kaz’s political aspirations. Undeterred, Kaz helps Noni escape the media frenzy, leading them to a secluded escape in Mexico, where Noni relishes the anonymity of being away from the spotlight.
Their tranquil getaway is disrupted when Noni’s mother discovers their location and persuades her to complete her promotional duties for the album despite Kaz’s protests. Back in the hustle and bustle of her career, Noni asserts herself at a meeting with her record label, insisting that her own music be included, much to their dismay. She ultimately decides to part ways with the label and dismiss her mother as her manager, reclaiming her autonomy.
Returning to the UK, she prepares for a performance where Kaz surprises her backstage, affirming his love. When it’s her turn to take the stage, Noni boldly chooses to perform her new song, stepping into her own spotlight on her terms.
