A Promise (2014) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of A Promise (2014), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In 1915, amidst the chaos of World War I, a naïve yet compassionate Armenian man named Michael (played by Oscar Isaac) journeys to Constantinople to inform his uncle about his plans to attend medical school. Arriving at his uncle’s home, he discovers a loving family, which includes two daughters, one of whom is Ana (portrayed by Charlotte Le Bon), a talented dance instructor with a tragic past. Since losing her mother at a young age, Ana was raised by her father, a renowned violinist, whose death left her burdened with debt and sorrow.

As Michael begins his medical education, he befriends Emre (played by Marwan Kenzari), the son of a Turkish official who faces pressure to either pursue medicine or join the army. Emre, who struggles with his studies, finds solace in Michael’s friendship. Meanwhile, Ana captures the attention of Chris Myers (portrayed by Christian Bale), an American journalist working for the Associated Press. Although there seems to be a budding connection between Ana and Michael, their relationship remains platonic since Michael has promised himself to another woman back home.

Their lives intertwine further during a luncheon, where Chris’s drunken remarks embarrass Ana, prompting a confrontation about his behavior. Despite his uncle’s insistence that Michael and Ana would make a good couple, Michael is torn between his duties to his fiancée and his affections for Ana.

As war looms, the Turkish government begins rounding up Armenian intellectuals, and panic ensues. Emre tries to protect Michael by arranging for him to avoid military service. Chris, still pursuing his journalistic ventures, documents the horrors faced by Armenians, including brutal massacres witnessed firsthand. As things spiral out of control, Michael is ultimately arrested, thrust into a horrific reality filled with forced labor and violence.

Six months later, Michael finds himself in a labor camp, where a series of tragic events unfold, illustrating the extreme cruelty of the regime. After a daring escape through a chaotic series of incidents involving dynamite, Michael finds temporary refuge with an Armenian couple, who are desperately seeking their missing sons.

Michael’s journey brings him back to his family, where he prepares to marry Maral, his fiancée. However, his heart still aches for Ana. Meanwhile, Ana, with Chris, takes on a mission to rescue orphans and help Michael’s family. A devastating turn of events leaves Michael’s family in jeopardy when the Turks retaliate against their village.

Amidst the battles, Chris bravely advocates for the survival of those caught in the conflict, risking his own life in the process. As the villagers make their stand, with Michael torn between fear and a sense of duty, the situation escalates into a climactic showdown against the Turkish forces.

As the French warship arrives to provide aid, chaos erupts, and desperate attempts to save Ana culminate in tragedy. Though Michael rescues another, the anguish of losing Ana proves unbearable, marking an impactful moment in his life.

In a reflective voice-over, Michael recounts the journey of survival, ultimately adopting Yeva (played by Milene Mayer) and embarking on a new life in America with the other orphans. The story closes with a poignant acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide, underscoring the importance of remembrance and truth as Michael wishes for the presence of lost loved ones during a bittersweet celebration.
