In 1944, during the final years of the Japanese occupation, two girls are born in the same village but destined for completely different fates. Jong-boon Kim Hyang-gi and Young-ae Kim Sae-ron grow up under markedly different circumstances: Jong-boon is poor but full of zest, while Young-ae is the youngest daughter of a wealthy family who excels in her studies and is admired by those around her.

Jong-boon admires the intelligent and beautiful Young-ae and envies her when she is sent away to Japan. Wishing for a better life, Jong-boon begs her mother Jang Young-nam to send her to Japan as well.

One day, while her mother is away, Jong-boon is left alone at home with her younger brother. Suddenly, Japanese soldiers storm into their house, forcibly dragging her away onto a train bound for an unknown destination. Confused and terrified, Jong-boon finds herself surrounded by other girls her age, all trembling in fear. Just then, Young-ae, whom she had believed to be studying abroad in Japan, is thrown into the same train car.

Now sharing the same tragic fate, the two girls are thrust into the horrors of war. While Jong-boon clings to the desperate hope of returning home, Young-ae, resigned to the cruel reality, makes a dangerous decision to bring an end to their nightmare. The film portrays a stark, hopeful, and heartbreaking portrait of resilience in the face of overwhelming hardship, highlighting the cost of survival, the bonds that form under pressure, and the ways in which innocence can be fractured by the brutalities of conflict.

Snowy Road Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Snowy Road (2015): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why were Jong-boon and Young-ae abducted?

The girls were abducted as part of the Japanese military's organized system of "comfort women" - women and girls forcibly taken from occupied territories during World War II to serve as sexual slaves. Japanese soldiers raided villages and kidnapped young women, dragging them onto trains heading to military brothels in Manchuria. This was a widespread practice during the Japanese occupation of Korea.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes establish that Young-ae was sent away to study in Japan, which initially seemed to protect her from the same fate as poorer girls in the village.

  • comfort women
  • abduction
  • japanese occupation
  • korean girls
  • manchuria
  • wwii
Q2

How did Young-ae end up on the same train as Jong-boon?

Young-ae had been sent to Japan to study, but she was likely taken from there by Japanese forces. When Jong-boon is thrown into the train car, she unexpectedly sees Young-ae among the other abducted girls. This shocking reunion shows that the war's reach extended even to those who seemed protected by privilege and distance from the village.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes that Young-ae was sent away to Japan, but the summary does not explain how she was captured - only that she shares the same fate.

  • young-ae capture
  • jong-boon reunion
  • study abroad
Q3

Why does Young-ae make a dangerous decision during the journey?

Young-ae accepts the grim reality of their situation and makes a desperate attempt to take control of their fate. While Jong-boon clings to hope of returning home, Young-ae recognizes that escape may be impossible and chooses a risky course of action to end their nightmare. This reflects her different coping mechanism compared to Jong-boon's optimism.

Foreshadowing: Young-ae's resigned attitude contrasts sharply with Jong-boon's hopefulness from the moment they are together on the train.

  • young-ae decision
  • desperation
  • escape attempt
  • captivity
Q4

Why do Jong-boon and Young-ae react differently to their captivity?

Jong-boon clings to hope of returning home, using memories of her village and family as a lifeline to endure the journey. Young-ae, having already experienced the world beyond the village through her education in Japan, accepts the cruel reality and feels compelled to take decisive action. Their contrasting responses stem from their different upbringings - Jong-boon's innocence and poverty versus Young-ae's exposure to broader world knowledge.

Foreshadowing: The opening scenes establish their differing personalities: Jong-boon is poor but spirited, while Young-ae is educated and seemingly more worldly.

  • hope vs acceptance
  • jong-boon young-ae relationship
  • captivity mindset
Q5

What happens to Jong-boon and Young-ae after the war ends?

After the war ends, the two girls escape from the camp and go their separate paths. Jong-bun (the older Jong-boon) survives and later becomes one of the last surviving victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese Army. Decades later, as an elderly woman in her eighties, she offers guidance to a troubled teenager, confronting her own painful history in the process.

  • after war
  • escape
  • survival
  • jong-bun elderly
  • teenager guidance
Q6

Why does Jong-boon beg her mother to send her to Japan?

Jong-boon dreams of escaping poverty and having a better life. She admires Young-ae's intelligence and beauty and envies the opportunities that come with wealth. When she sees Young-ae sent away to study in Japan, she desperately pleads with her mother to send her too - not knowing that this very journey will lead to her abduction and unimaginable suffering.

Foreshadowing: This wish becomes tragically ironic when Japanese soldiers storm her home, taking her away on a train - the opposite of the better life she dreamed about.

  • poverty
  • dream
  • better life
  • japan
  • envy
Q7

Why are Jong-boon and Young-ae destined for different fates?

The two girls are born in the same village in 1944 but grow up in vastly different circumstances. Jong-boon is poor but full of life, while Young-ae is the youngest daughter of a wealthy family who excels academically. Their contrasting upbringings - one marked by poverty, the other by privilege - seed their different approaches to survival and hope throughout their ordeal.

Foreshadowing: The film opens by establishing their different backgrounds, which directly influences how each girl copes with trauma.

  • social class
  • wealth poverty
  • different fates
  • jong-boon young-ae backgrounds
Q8

How do Jong-boon and Young-ae support each other during captivity?

Despite coming from different social classes, the two girls form a strong bond while trapped together. Their friendship becomes a source of strength amid the horrors of war, providing mutual comfort and humanity in an otherwise brutal environment. This connection helps them endure the unimaginable suffering they face.

Foreshadowing: Their bond is foreshadowed by Jong-boon's earlier admiration for Young-ae, which transforms from envy into shared survival.

  • bond
  • support
  • survival together
