The Promise

In 1915, amid the turmoil of the First World War, a young Armenian man named Michael (played by Oscar Isaac), arrives in Constantinople with aspirations of becoming a doctor. He eagerly reunites with his uncle, who resides with his wife and two daughters. Among them is Ana, a dance instructor portrayed by Charlotte Le Bon. Ana’s background reveals a tragic past; her father, a celebrated violinist, abandoned her in Paris after her mother’s death to pursue his career, ultimately succumbing to despair over his debts.

As Michael embarks on his medical journey, he befriends Emre (Marwan Kenzari), a Turkish student struggling under the weight of his father’s expectations to either attend medical school or enlist in the army. The two men navigate their studies and personal lives, where Michael is caught in a complicated relationship with Ana, despite her romance with American journalist Chris Myers (played by Christian Bale). Their friendship grows as they all navigate the vibrant nightlife of Constantinople, including one particularly memorable evening at a club.

Tensions mount when a luncheon reveals the German alliance with the Turks, leading Chris to intoxicate himself and publicly insult others, which causes embarrassment for Ana. Chris, in his journalistic capacity, delves into documenting these atrocities, while Michael’s family faces increasing danger.

When Michael’s uncle is taken by Turkish authorities, Michael and Ana seek Chris’s assistance, only to find themselves entangled in the darker realities of war. The journey becomes perilous when Michael is captured and forced into labor, leading a grueling life where he witnesses horrific violence against fellow prisoners. Hope presents itself when a comrade, a former clown, uses humor to bolster spirits and subsequently sacrifices himself to aid Michael’s escape.

Michael’s journey to reunite with his family takes him home, where he learns the dire fate that has befallen his loved ones. He eventually marries Maral, his fiancée, but his heart continues to dwell with Ana. Meanwhile, Ana, Chris, and Michael’s relatives navigate their own challenges in a environment ripe with fear and uncertainty.

Circumstances compel Michael and his group to confront Turkish forces as they fight for survival, culminating in a desperate attempt to save countless lives as the Turkish regime continues its brutal campaign. With Chris imprisoned and the stakes higher than ever, the battle for survival intensifies.
