Romano [Marcello Mastroianni] sits alone at a table in the quiet dining room of an empty Italian ship, nursing a drink while the hum of the ocean carries the lull of distant conversations. The arrival of Pavel [Pavel Kadochnikov], a middle‑aged Russian guest on his honeymoon cruise, breaks the stillness, and the two men strike up a candid, almost confessional exchange. Romano’s life story unfolds with a quiet irony. Born into modest means, he trained as an architect but never had the chance to practice after marrying Elisa [Silvana Mangano], a wealthy heiress who now runs the bank she inherited. Back home in Italy, the ground shifts beneath Romano’s feet. Elisa’s bank collapses and bailiffs begin selling her grand house, leaving the couple financially strained but emotionally unsettled. Elisa greets Romano with a letter from Anna and probes whether he has a lover in Russia. Romano denies it, and somehow the tension eases as they reconcile. Then fortune smiles again: Elisa unexpectedly inherits a legacy, and the pair can resume their lavish lifestyle, casting a new gloss on their complicated marriage.
