In rural Upstate New York, Victor Modino—a thirty-something who works as a cook—keeps the small roadhouse alive: Pete and Dolly’s, a place founded by his now-deceased father and tended by his elderly mother. The bar’s daily rhythm is anchored by Dolly, who, despite poor health, remains a formidable presence in the back of the kitchen, where she grumbles at Delores, a longtime employee who once had an affair with Pete. Delores views Dolly’s aging as a challenge to her own standing, and the tension between these two women bleeds into the restaurant’s atmosphere.

When a new waitress, Callie, arrives—soft-spoken and recently left college in Syracuse—the mood shifts. Callie instantly notices Victor’s quiet charm and culinary talent, and she encourages him to consider attending the Culinary Institute of America. Dolly and Delores, however, greet the idea with skepticism, casting doubt on the younger woman’s ambitions. Despite the initial friction, Callie’s presence begins to thaw Victor’s guarded demeanor; he becomes more determined to lose weight and present himself in a way that might draw Callie closer, even as he learns she has a steady boyfriend.

Tragedy strikes when Dolly suffers a heart attack and is hospitalized. Victor tells Delores and Callie that Dolly is undergoing minor surgery, but Dolly’s condition deteriorates. Several days pass before Dolly dies while Victor is eating lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Grief grips him, yet he keeps Dolly’s death to himself and continues to run the restaurant, coping through overeating and a creeping sense of isolation. Delores, sensing a shift in power, grows more aggressive toward Callie, while Leo, Delores’ alcoholic friend, begins to flirt with danger by assaulting Victor when he won’t take Delores’ side.

One night, a confrontation separates Callie from her boyfriend, Jeff, and she publicly addresses Delores in front of the customers. Delores retaliates in a more personal way, and the restaurant’s night hum comes apart at the seams. Afterward, Callie invites a moment of rare tenderness with Victor, leading to a brief kiss that she quickly pulls back from, unsure of what she wants.

A pivotal moment comes when Callie asks Victor to visit Dolly in the hospital, and Victor agrees, though he cannot reveal that Dolly has already died. The next morning, Callie arrives at Victor’s house to accompany him to the hospital, but instead he drives her to the cemetery and reveals Dolly’s freshly dug grave. Callie becomes hysterical, and soon she misses her shifts; Leo and Delores learn, through a hospital employee, that Dolly had died weeks earlier and they confront Victor, blaming him for the deception. The taunting and grief push Victor to a breaking point, and he lashes out, smashing objects behind the counter.

When Callie returns with Jeff later that evening to collect her final paycheck, she spends a few quiet minutes with Victor. She explains her plan to go back to college but also promises to visit him, signaling a tentative goodbye and a new direction for her own life.

In the aftermath, Victor’s emotional hard shell begins to crack. He gradually stops the binge eating that once steadied him, starts restoring the neglected kitchen, and discovers a flicker of confidence. A chance encounter with Darlene, an attractive cashier at the local grocery store, hints at new possibilities as she shows interest in him. The film closes on this note of cautious renewal: Victor is still processing Dolly’s absence, but he is beginning to reengage with the world around him, finding small, hopeful steps toward a life beyond the roadhouse’s walls.
