A Man and a Woman

Anne Gauthier Anouk Aimée is a young widow who raises her daughter, Françoise Gauthier Souad Amidou, on her own after the death of her husband, a stuntman she witnessed dying on a film set. Working as a film script supervisor, she splits her days between a quiet apartment in Paris and the seaside Deauville, where Françoise attends boarding school. On the other side of the equation is Jean-Louis Duroc [Jean-Louis Trintignant], a widower who raises his son, Antoine Duroc [Antoine Sire], after his wife Valérie Duroc [Valérie Lagrange] tragically took her own life following a near-fatal crash during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He remains a professional race car driver, shuttling between Paris and Deauville, where his son also goes to boarding school.

One ordinary day in Deauville, the two parents cross paths at the boarding school when Anne misses the last train back to Paris. Jean-Louis offers her a lift, and their mutual attraction begins to unfold as they chat during the drive home. After a short, tentative exchange of contact details, he asks if she would like to drive up together the following weekend, and she agrees, leaving him with a hopeful, if wary, sense of possibility. The week that follows is busy with race preparations for Jean-Louis, but Anne keeps him in her thoughts as she moves through her routine, watching the sport’s drama unfold on television and clinging to the sense of connection they sparked.

When Sunday arrives, they meet again before dawn for a rain-soaked journey to Deauville. The air carries the scent of fresh rain and the sky is gray, yet their mood brightens as they spend the day together. Over a pleasant Sunday lunch, their children—who quickly get along—share laughter and stories, hinting at a possible blended family. A boat ride and a sunset stroll along the shore deepen their bond, and they find themselves drawn to one another in a way that feels both thrilling and dangerous.

Jean-Louis plunges into the Monte Carlo Rally, a demanding test of skill amid challenging weather along the icy Riviera roads. Anne follows every update with mounting concern and pride, watching as his white Ford Mustang, number 145, navigates the treacherous course. Out of hundreds of starters, only a small handful endure to the finish, a testament to the grit of the drivers in such brutal conditions. After the race concludes, Anne sends a telegram that captures the depth of her feelings: Bravo! I love you. Anne. The moment arrives at a dinner for drivers, held at the Monte Carlo Casino, when Jean-Louis receives the telegram, and he responds by jumping into another Mustang—the race’s number 184 car—and racing through the night toward Paris, driven by the belief that a message from a loved one is worth any distance. He imagines the reunion, picturing it in vivid cinema-like scenes as he travels.

He reaches Paris only to learn that Anne is in Deauville; he presses on, determined to close the distance between them. When he finally arrives in Deauville, he discovers Anne and the children on the beach, and they run into each other’s arms as the sea sighs at their feet. They retreat from the public eye, drive into town, and rent a room where they share a moment of intense, passionate connection. Yet the encounter unsettles Anne. Her memories of her late husband linger, and she fears losing herself in a new life too soon. She proposes returning to Paris alone, and after they part at the station, Jean-Louis heads south toward Paris as her train arrives.

On the platform, Anne spots him and hesitates for a heartbeat before stepping forward. Their eyes lock, and a quiet acknowledgment passes between them as they move toward one another and embrace again, offering a fragile hope that love might bridge time, loss, and the memories that still cling to them both.
