Sally Nash and Joe Therrian are a Hollywood duo marking their sixth wedding anniversary after having reconciled from a recent separation. Joe, a novelist, is preparing to direct the film adaptation of his latest bestseller, while Sally, an actress, finds herself sidelined as he chooses not to cast her in the lead role. This decision stems from his belief that she is too old for the part, despite it being inspired by her. Tension simmers between the couple, further exacerbated by their disagreements with their strict neighbors, clean-and-sober writer Ryan and interior decorator Monica Rose, primarily over their noisy dog, Otis. As they get ready to welcome their guests, the atmosphere is thick with unresolved issues.
Among the guests expected are the aging actor Cal Gold, who stars alongside Sally in her current romantic comedy, and his wife, Sophia, along with their two young children. The group also includes director Mac Forsyth, who is at the helm of Sally and Cal’s film, and his troubled, anorexic wife Clair. Tensions mount with the presence of photographer Gina Taylor, who shares a complicated history with Joe, including a romantic link prior to his marriage. Others attending include business manager Jerry Adams with his spouse Judy, the quirky violinist Levi Panes, Joe’s old roommate and former lover Jeffrey from Oxford, and aspiring actress Skye Davidson, whom Joe has cast in the role that Sally believes should have been hers. In an attempt to ease the palpable friction with their neighbors, Sally and Joe have also invited the Roses.
The evening starts off with cheerful charades and lively entertainment. As guests share toasts, Joe hands out ecstasy, a gift from Skye, which soon takes effect. What initially seems like a festive gathering unravels into chaos as accusations fly, secrets come to light, and relationships begin to fracture. The situation is further complicated by the alarming disappearance of Otis and a phone call from Joe’s father delivering heartbreaking news about his cherished sister, Lucy.
