The 12th Man

Jan Baalsrud was the sole survivor because he was the only one who managed to swim across the freezing fjord after the TNT was ignited. The other eleven fighters were either shot on the beach or captured. Baalsrud's exceptional physical endurance and swimming ability, combined with his ability to hide in the darkness, allowed him to make the perilous escape while the Germans concentrated on rounding up the others.

Earlier in the mission, the team had already lost their local contact, which meant no one was waiting to help them escape once ashore.

Baalsrud swam across the fjord in sub-zero temperatures, a feat that pushed his body to its absolute limits. The extreme cold initially shocked his system, but his determination to avoid capture drove him forward. He was only able to survive because he reached the shore quickly and found shelter before hypothermia could set in completely.

The film establishes early on that Baalsrud is physically resilient, a quality that becomes crucial in this moment.

Two of the captured fighters died during torture while being interrogated by German forces. The remaining eight were executed on the island of Tromsøya after further questioning. This brutal outcome demonstrates the ruthlessness of the Nazi occupation and the high cost of resistance activities.

A German sympathiser betrayed the resistance fighters by informing German forces of their arrival. Compounding the disaster, their local contact was already dead when they reached Norway, leaving them without crucial support. This betrayal immediately compromised the entire mission.

The absence of their expected contact should have warned the team that something was wrong.

The local Norwegians risked severe retaliation from the Gestapo because they were committed to helping a fellow Norwegian escape Nazi occupation. These civilians provided shelter, food, and guidance at great personal risk, driven by solidarity with the resistance movement and compassion for Baalsrud's desperate situation. Their courage became his lifeline through the harsh Arctic landscape.

Baalsrud escaped from Rebbenesøya to Sweden by traveling through Lyngenhalvøya and Manndalen, guided by local helpers who knew the terrain. This route took him across treacherous mountain and coastal terrain in the dead of winter. Sweden served as a neutral haven where he could finally be safe from the Gestapo.

Operation Martin was a sabotage mission where twelve Norwegian resistance fighters traveled from the Shetland Islands aboard a fishing boat carrying eight tons of TNT. Their goal was to destroy German military facilities in occupied Norway. The mission was a significant behind-enemy-lines operation that could have disrupted German activities in the region.

The German warship located the fishing boat because the betrayal by the German sympathiser had already alerted German forces to their presence. Once the warship spotted the boat, it opened fire, forcing the fighters to ignite their TNT cargo and abandon ship. The element of surprise was completely lost.

The fighters ignited the eight tons of TNT aboard their fishing boat when the German warship opened fire, creating a massive explosion as a last-ditch effort. This served two purposes: it denied the Germans the valuable explosives and created enough chaos to cover their escape attempt into the fjord.

Baalsrud's escape lasted an extended period as he trekked through the brutal Arctic winter landscape, enduring extreme cold, hunger, and injuries. The journey from the fjord near Tromsø across to Sweden through Lyngenhalvøya and Manndalen took considerable time, with each day presenting new life-threatening challenges.
