The Heroes of Telemark

In a tense WWII drama inspired by true events, the Norwegian resistance mounts a daring assault on the Nazi-occupied Vemork Norsk Hydro plant in the town of Rjukan, Telemark, where heavy water could fuel atomic ambitions. The story follows Rolf Pedersen, a Norwegian physics professor who, while initially content to wait out the war, is drawn into the fight by the local resistance led by Knut Straud. Rolf’s involvement rekindles a personal thread as his ex-wife Anna Pedersen becomes entwined in the clandestine effort, and their renewed connection adds an intimate tension to the high-stakes mission.

As the plan unfolds, Rolf and Knut embark on a perilous journey that begins with a bold move: they hijack a passenger steamship to carry microfilmed plans of the hydroelectric plant to Britain, where the Allies recognize the importance of the information. The data they deliver underscores the urgency of the mission and earns the team substantial support. After this crucial groundwork, they return to Norway by parachute to organize a bold commando raid aimed at disabling the plant itself. The assault gains momentum as a Royal Engineers force accompanies the operation, but the mission encounters a devastating setback when the British plane is shot down over Norway by German forces. Undaunted, Pedersen and Straud lead a small, skilled group of Norwegian saboteurs into the densely monitored facility, and the raid, while initially successful, is quickly neutralized as the Germans replace and repair the key equipment.

The tension escalates with the infiltration of a Quisling saboteur into the resistance. The traitor’s duplicity seeds doubt within the group about how to handle the infiltrator, and ultimately he escapes, betrays them, and triggers a German airstrike that destroys their safe house. The pursuit that follows forces Rolf and Knut into a grueling confrontation, and in a tense turn of events, Rolf must confront the saboteur one last time, ending his threat in a decisive showdown.

With German plans to ship heavy water to the fatherland looming, the resistance shifts to a new strike: they sabotage the ferry that is carrying the steel drums of heavy water. The operation is perilous and high-stakes, and the ship sinks to the deepest part of a fjord. Rolf finds himself aboard the ferry during a moment of human connection—when he notices a widow and her young child preparing to sail—and improvises a tense, life-boat-like game for the children to practice with life jackets at the stern. The improvisation proves lifesaving when the vessel sinks, allowing the children, along with the widow, to escape. In a final act of cooperative resolve, Knut and Anna join a small rescue effort, guiding the remaining passengers to safety in a separate boat.

Throughout the narrative, the film balances gripping action with intimate human drama, depicting how courage, strategy, and sacrifice intersect under occupation.
