The film opens with Lallan Singh, [Abhishek Bachchan], shooting Michael ‘Mike’ Mukherjee, [Ajay Devgn], from his bike on the Vidyasagar Setu, sending him plunging into the water below. The moment is witnessed by Arjun Balachandran, [Vivek Oberoi], and the narrative unfolds through a series of pre-incident flashbacks that fill in everyone’s motives.
Lallan is a Bihar-born goon who has drifted to Kolkata, where his brother Gopal Singh, [Sonu Sood], has deserted him, leaving Lallan to hustle for money in a world where loyalty is scarce. He loves, marries, and brutalizes his wife, Sashi Biswas Singh, [Rani Mukerji], a relationship built on control and violence. He takes on a contract through Gopal to work as a hitman for the ambitious politician Prosenjit Bhattacharya, [Om Puri], pulling him deeper into a corrupt power struggle at the heart of the city.
Michael is an influential student leader determined to keep politicians like Prosenjit out of college elections. His closest allies are Vishnu, [Karthik Kumar], who acts as his right-hand man, and Trilok, [Abhinav Kashyap], who helps drive their campus movement forward. In Michael’s personal life, he is drawn to his neighbor Radhika, played by [Esha Deol], who lives with her aunt and uncle, adding a tender, human layer to the political turmoil surrounding him. Prosenjit grows wary of the growing student momentum and tests Michael with offers designed to buy him off. When Michael refuses a foreign scholarship meant to quiet him, Gopal tightens his grip and Lallan is ordered to intensify the pressure.
As the plot thickens, Gopal beats Trilok, triggering a fierce confrontation with Michael and his classmates who stand by Trilok’s side. Into this swirl of danger arrives Arjun Balachandran, the carefree son of an IAS officer who hopes for a future in the United States. He meets Meera, [Kareena Kapoor Khan], and the pair quickly connect—Arjun even asks Meera for coffee and shares a beach moment that hints at deeper feelings. The world of ambition, love, and risk now overlaps with a political battlefield where every decision can be life-altering.
The tension escalates as Arjun witnesses the aftermath of Michael’s accident and, despite his initial reluctance, becomes entangled in the students’ cause. Lallan’s pursuit of control continues, and he confronts Arjun, leaving him with a broken arm before Michael, who is recovering, steps in to join the fight. The two men form an uneasy alliance as they decide to contest in the elections together. Meanwhile, Prosenjit’s influence grows sharper; he kills Gopal after learning he had aired an eyewitness account that connected the crime to their scheme. Prosenjit’s manipulation deepens, and he sets his sights on kidnapping Arjun, Vishnu, and Trilok to derail their campaign. Dablu, [Vijay Raaz], a former ally with mixed loyalties, tries to help the trio escape, but ultimately pays with his life when Lallan turns on him while aiding Arjun’s escape and cutting off his bid for mercy.
The climax intensifies at Vidyasagar Setu, where Lallan finally traps Arjun and delivers a brutal beating. In a decisive turn, Michael arrives just in time to intervene and rescue Arjun. A brutal, high-stakes fight ensues, and Michael overpowers Lallan, choosing to spare him and hand him over to the police rather than seek vengeance. With the threat quelled, Michael, Arjun, Vishnu, and Trilok seal their victory by winning the four seats they had contested for, stepping into the political arena together and setting a new course for their lives and their city.**
