Vikram Rai Bahadur is the pampered only son of a wealthy family led by Sharda. During a vacation in Srinagar, he meets a gifted singer, Sunita Sikkan, and what begins as a chance encounter blossoms into a deep, fated romance. At the very temple where they first met, they vow to remain together until death, a promise that becomes the axis of everything that follows.

Yet Vikram’s elevated world collides with his mother’s worries. She fears that marrying a penniless artist could imperil the family business, and she urges them to part for the sake of security. The lovers choose a quiet temple wedding, hoping to keep their bond intact. On the way there, a devastating car crash changes the course of their lives: Vikram sustains a brain injury and slips into a coma, while Sunita survives but is left severely disfigured. Sharda sways Sunita to believe that Vikram cannot love her as she is now, and Sunita, heartbroken, agrees to stay away. She is told Vikram has died in the accident, and she is moved to a different world of silence and shadow.

In Delhi, Sunita undergoes plastic surgery under the care of Dr. Mehra, who grows close to her like a father. The operation reshapes her appearance, but the once-familiar face can no longer be fully reclaimed. Sunita returns to the world she left behind, arriving at Vikram’s house only to find him engaged to another woman, Rita Saxena. Vikram does not recognize Sunita, and the sight of her nameless grief provokes a fresh ache in him. In the wake of this new life, Sunita assumes a new identity, Kusum Mehra, determined to begin anew while concealing her real past from the man she once loved.

Meanwhile, Vikram pours his heart into a cause close to Sunita’s memory—building an orphanage in Srinagar and raising funds by singing on stage. [Kusum] and Dr. Mehra attend one of these performances, unaware that Vikram himself is the artist performing. When Kusum hears him sing about love, she counters with a powerful, heartfelt song, angry that he would speak of love when he seems to have forgotten hers. Her voice, rich with memory, stirs something in Vikram and reminds him of Sunita.

Vikram asks Kusum to join him on stage, but she refuses, and Dr. Mehra urges her to confront him directly. The next day, as Kusum leaves her home, Vikram appears in his car and offers her a ride. A moment of danger returns—their car journey echoes the old accident—and Kusum faints. When Vikram visits her, he learns she had suffered a similar earlier accident. Kusum probes, asking about a forehead scar, and Vikram reveals that he, too, once forgot everything after a crash. The revelation shatters her carefully built facade and she reveals every detail she knows about the life-altering incident.

Dr. Mehra then shares a truth that shatters the secrets kept for years: Sunita and Kusum are the same person, and Kusum’s happiness has come from Vikram’s enduring love. He urges Sharda to let the lovers reunite, but she remains wary. Still, Kusum sings with Vikram once more, and they dance in the manner they used to when they sang their shared favorite, Yeh Vaada Raha. The moment of recognition comes when Vikram, overwhelmed, calls Kusum by Sunita’s name, forcing her to confront the truth she has guarded so long. She flees, torn between the past she longs to reclaim and the life she has built.

Kusum travels to Jammu and Kashmir, asking her father not to tell Vikram anything—yet she cannot escape the pull of the man who loves her. Vikram, drawn by the memory of Sunita and guided by Sharda’s confession, pursues the truth to Kashmir. He finds Sunita waiting outside her home, and as the two face each other, she rushes toward the temple where they first vowed to stay together. There, in the sacred space where their bond began, they renew their vows and embrace, the years of separation dissolving into a single, enduring love that endures beyond every obstacle.
