Abijot [Harbhajan Mann] and Mitro [Tulip Joshi] become friends as children. Abijot hails from a rich, high-class family while Mitro belongs to a poor, low-class family. The two families disapprove of their friendship, and to separate them, Abijot’s family sends him and his cousin Roop [Gulzar Inder Chahal] to Chandigarh so they can study away from Mitro and her world.
Fifteen years pass, and Abijot and Roop return. Abijot reconnects with Mitro, and the two secretly long to marry, but their family differences stand in the way and block any union. Mitro’s family arranges a different match for her, but on the wedding day she drinks poison and flees to Abijot, telling him that she will meet him again in this birth before dying.
This heartbreak pushes Abijot to leave India and seek a new life in Canada, hoping to quiet the ache for Mitro. He stays first at his mama’s house, but his jealous cousin Terry makes him feel unwelcome, so he ends up moving in with Lucky [Gurpreet Ghuggi], his childhood friend who is married to a Black woman. Roop promises to come to Canada soon, and one day Abijot and Lucky head to a coffee shop where Abijot encounters a striking double of Mitro, named Ekam, who turns out to be blind.
To ease Abijot’s pain, his uncle buys him an apartment, and a sense of stability returns. Abijot comforting Ekam strengthens their bond, and they fall in love. When he asks about her dreams, Ekam reveals that her greatest wish is simply to see the world again. Seizing a chance to make a future, Abijot lies to his parents in India, asking for money to buy a house; instead, he uses the funds to pay for Ekam’s surgery, a plan that succeeds and restores her sight.
Yet as Ekam is about to remove the bandage, Abijot is not there. Ekam begs the doctor to wait, but the moment arrives, and another patient must be tended to. Abijot arrives in a rush, but Iqbal—Ekam’s fiancé—gets there first. Ekam and her family learn that Iqbal left because his father was murdered and he was jailed for a few years, not because of her blindness. Abijot leaves sadly.
After the successful operation, Ekam remains unsettled, realizing her heart belongs to Abijot. Meanwhile, Abijot’s father grows sick, and he returns to India, leaving Roop in Canada. His father’s wish is simple—that Abijot marries well—so Abijot agrees to pursue marriage. Ekam’s father tells her she can marry whomever she chooses, and she quietly decides that person will be Abijot herself.
Ekam rushes to Abijot’s apartment to propose, only to find Roop there. Roop greets her as Mitro, triggering a flood of memories. Ekam recalls that Abijot once told her he would call her Mitro, not Ekam. She sees photographs of a girl who resembles her and remembers Abijot mentioning two lookalikes who aren’t related. Confused, Ekam asks who Mitro really is and where Abijot has gone. Roop explains that Mitro is Abijot’s former love and that Abijot returned to India to tend to his ailing father. Ekam fears that he left for good, assuming Mitro’s memory still holds him.
Roop then reveals that Mitro died a year earlier and that Abijot had gone back to his sick father. Ekam is stunned by the revelation. Soon, discussions of engagements resume, and Roop brings Ekam forward into the circle. Everyone is shocked to learn that this is truly Mitro’s tragedy revisited in Ekam’s form, and not a new match at all.
Facing the truth, Abijot explains that this is Ekam, and he recalls Mitro’s vow to meet him again in this birth. The families come to understand that two lovers who are meant to be together cannot be kept apart, and they consent to the union. In the end, Abijot and Ekam—restored to one another and united by a fateful twist of reincarnation—live happily ever after.
