Brandon Sinclair hosts a house party in Fairfield, California, where he uses a Ouija board with his ex-girlfriend Linda Brewster to contact the spirit of David. Linda's boyfriend Jim Morar insults David, provoking the spirit to slash Brandon's car tires. This initial contact sets the stage for the growing supernatural events.

The next day, Linda uses Brandon's Ouija board again to contact David, who reveals the location of her lost engagement ring, hinting at his ongoing presence. This deepens Linda's fascination with communicating with David, despite the unsettling atmosphere.

Jim's friend Lloyd is killed at a construction site when drywall falls unexpectedly, leading to suspicion and concern. Linda contacts David about the accident, but the spirit claims he did not cause Lloyd's death, indicating that darker forces may be involved.

Linda begins to experience symptoms of nausea and other distressing effects, leading her to believe she might be pregnant. Her obsession with communicating with David intensifies as she becomes increasingly mesmerized by the spirit and its influence.

Brandon enlists psychic medium Zarabeth Crawford to contact David through a séance, aiming to understand or exorcise the spirit. Zarabeth channels David, who identifies himself as a ten-year-old boy, reinforcing Linda's protective instincts toward him.

After the séance, Zarabeth researches the events but is violently attacked at home—her throat is slashed and she is thrown onto a sundial, impaling her. Her death suggests that the spirit, or another malevolent force, is now targeting those involved.

Linda is violently thrown against a wall and hospitalized. Doctors confirm she is not pregnant, dispelling earlier fears. Her condition worsens as the supernatural entity's influence becomes more evident and dangerous.

Jim and Brandon investigate and find a newspaper article about a boy named David Simpson who drowned in a nearby lake. They later realize the spirit terrorizing Linda is actually Carlos Malfeitor, an axe murderer from 1930, who has inhabited their home.

Jim and Brandon attempt to communicate with David using a Ouija board at the lake, but they discover that Malfeitor is the true malevolent spirit. Brandon is killed by Malfeitor with a hatchet during this encounter, intensifying the threat.

After Linda discharges from the hospital, she is attacked by Malfeitor and becomes possessed. She violently attacks Jim at home, and Lt. Dewhurst visits, suspecting Jim of murder, while Linda turns hostile, taunting Jim to kill himself.

Jim fights to stop the malevolent entity by destroying the Ouija board, which Linda tries to convince him is a portal. Jim shoots the board through a window, breaking its influence and leading to Linda's temporary release from Malfeitor's grip.

Jim and Linda, now free from the evil spirit, marry and start anew. Meanwhile, Mrs. Moses finds the Ouija board after cleaning the house, and its planchette moves to 'yes' by itself, hinting that the spirit world may still be active.
