Witchboard (2024) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Witchboard (2024), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In a house party in Fairfield, California, the night takes a dark turn when a group uses a Ouija board to reach out to a spirit named David. The mood shifts from casual curiosity to unsettling tension as the board’s messages grow louder and more insistent. The sparks of fear begin when the spirit’s interference reaches beyond the party, and the dynamics between the participants start to fracture.

The drama centers on Brandon Sinclair and his ex-girlfriend Linda Brewster, whose uneasy history fuels the night’s escalating dread. After a confrontation where Linda’s boyfriend, Jim Morar, insults the spirit, the tension spills into Brandon’s car as tires are slashed in a sudden act of spite. The next day, Linda reuses Brandon’s old board to contact David, and the spirit reveals a practical, chilling detail: the location of Linda’s lost engagement ring. This revelation sets off a chain of events that blur the line between supernatural warning and a creeping, malevolent presence.

At a construction site where Jim works, the sudden death of a coworker—Lloyd—by falling drywall during the follow-up inquiry at his funeral, hints that something more sinister is at play. Linda’s continued contact with David intensifies, and she begins to experience troubling symptoms that mimic pregnancy, pushing Brandon and Jim toward desperate explanations and search for answers. Linda’s deterioration gives way to fear that the spirit is not a benign messenger but a force ready to seize control.

To address the danger, Brandon invites a psychic medium, Zarabeth Crawford, to conduct a séance and to perform an exorcism if the spirit proves hazardous. Zarabeth channels what she believes to be David, a ten-year-old boy, which seems to validate Linda’s growing belief that she is communicating with a child. But this supposed assistance quickly spirals into tragedy when Zarabeth returns home and is found dead—her throat cut and her body hurled through a window, landing on a sundial in a fatal impalement. The abrupt death seeds doubt and fear, and Jim begins to doubt whether the boy is the real danger or a misdirection.

As the investigation widens, Linda endures a violent attack that leaves her unconscious and hospitalized. Doctors rule out the pregnancy rumors, heightening the sense that something malevolent is at work. With Linda’s condition unstable, Jim and Brandon intensify their research, tracing a newspaper article about a drowning victim named David Simpson. Their search leads them to the lake where they attempt to communicate with the boy again, only to discover a darker truth: another, more savage spirit—Carlos Malfeitor—has been tormenting Linda all along.

A tense confrontation unfolds on a dock as Jim is nearly knocked unconscious by a toppled stack of fishing barrels, and Brandon is killed by Malfeitor with a hatchet. The shock of the loss drives Jim to confront the history of the house and its past—a biography of Malfeitor, an axe murderer who was shot by police in 1930, in the very residence that now binds Linda and Jim.

Linda’s possession resurfaces after she is discharged from the hospital, culminating in a brutal attack on Jim. The police investigation, led by Lieutenant Dewhurst, turns suspicious toward Jim as a suspect in the strange deaths, but Linda’s body seems to be under Malfeitor’s control as she lashes out with a fire poker. Jim, faced with a haunted “portal” in his own home, makes a decisive choice: he destroys the board by shooting it, breaking the chain of control and severing Malfeitor’s hold on Linda. The ultimate act frees them from the entity’s grasp, and Jim and Linda marry, choosing to rebuild their lives together.

In the quiet aftermath, the house returns to a fragile semblance of normalcy, but the eerie legacy lingers. The landlady, Mrs. Moses, finds the ominous board again while cleaning out the home with her granddaughter and contemplates its dark potential. The board is eventually discarded into a box, yet the planchette’s eerie movement persists—slipping to the word “yes” on its own, a final, unsettling reminder that some doors, once opened, may never fully close.

This story unfolds with a restrained clarity that emphasizes atmosphere, suspense, and the slow, inexorable tightening of fear. It builds a sense of dread from the intimate space of a home and a party into a broader meditation on grief, possession, and the thin line between the living and the departed. The emotional core rests on the fragile bond between Jim Morar and Linda Brewster, whose decision to face the supernatural forces threatening their lives ultimately tests and fortifies their love, even as the past within the house continues to murmur from walls that seem to remember more than they reveal.
