A quiet house party in Fairfield, California, sets the stage for a chilling supernatural encounter that escalates into a fight for survival. The story begins when Brandon Sinclair, played by Aaron Dominguez, gathers with his ex-girlfriend, Linda Brewster, played by Madison Iseman, at his home. They decide to use a Ouija board to contact the spirit of a boy named David, with whom Brandon had previously communicated. The session quickly turns hostile when Jim Morar, Linda’s current boyfriend, insults David, provoking the spirit to retaliate by slashing the tires of Brandon’s car.
The following day, Linda, still curious and haunted by the previous night’s events, uses Brandon’s Ouija board again. This time, the spirit, which she believes is David, gives her a clue—she learns the whereabouts of her lost engagement ring. Meanwhile, at the construction site where Jim works, tragedy strikes when Lloyd, a coworker, is killed due to a falling drywall. When Jim is questioned about the incident by Lieutenant Dewhurst, Linda attempts to contact David again, but the spirit denies any involvement, adding tension to the unfolding mystery.
As the days go on, Linda begins to feel increasingly disturbed. She experiences nausea and other strange symptoms, leading her and Jim to suspect she might be pregnant. Her obsession with communicating with David deepens, and she becomes more vulnerable to the sinister forces at play. To understand and potentially banish the spirit, Brandon invites Sarah “Zarabeth” Crawford, a psychic medium, to conduct a séance. Zarabeth channels David, who claims to be a ten-year-old boy, which makes Linda feel protective and connected to him.
However, the situation takes a dark turn when Zarabeth’s investigation ends in violence. Her throat is inexplicably slashed, and she is violently thrown through a window onto a sundial, impaling herself fatally. Brandon, upon hearing of Zarabeth’s death, begins to suspect that David’s spirit is responsible, but Jim remains skeptical.
The horror intensifies when Jim witnesses Linda being violently thrown against the wall, rendering her unconscious. She is taken to the hospital, where doctors later confirm she is not pregnant, contrary to her earlier suspicions. This revelation prompts Jim and Brandon to dig into the history of David’s spirit. They uncover a newspaper article about a young boy named David Simpson who drowned in a nearby lake. Desperate for answers, they travel to the lake and use the Ouija board again, hoping to reach the boy.
Their efforts reveal a far more malevolent presence: a sinister spirit named Carlos Malfeitor, a notorious axe murderer from the 1930s who was shot by police in the same house they now occupy. The revelation of Malfeitor’s background adds a new layer of danger, and before Jim and Brandon can fully comprehend the threat, they are attacked. Jim is knocked unconscious by a toppled stack of fishing barrels, while Brandon is killed by Malfeitor with a hatchet.
After their attacks, Jim is left to mourn Brandon’s death and realize the full extent of the evil they are battling. As he digs into Malfeitor’s history, he learns that the killer was executed in the house in 1930, confirming the house’s dark past. Linda, after being discharged, is targeted again and attacked by Malfeitor. The spirit has now possessed her, leading to a violent confrontation in their home. Lieutenant Dewhurst intervenes but is aggressively assaulted by Linda, who is under the influence of the evil spirit.
In a tense final stand, Linda taunts Jim, calling him the “portal” to Malfeitor’s rage. She tries to manipulate him into killing himself, but Jim refuses. In a desperate move, he destroys the Ouija board, breaking its hold over their lives. The struggle culminates in Jim pushing Linda through a window, forcing her to confront her own possession.
In the aftermath, Jim and Linda survive their ordeal and decide to marry, determined to move forward despite their trauma. However, a chilling ending leaves their future uncertain. When their landlady, Mrs. Moses, finds the discarded Ouija board and examines it, the planchette mysteriously moves to the word “yes” by itself, hinting that the malevolent spirit or some remnants of its influence may still linger, waiting for another opportunity to rise again.
This story is a haunting reminder of how dark spirits can manipulate the living, especially when curiosity leads to dangerous boundaries being crossed. The film explores themes of possession, the danger of meddling with the supernatural, and the thin line between reality and the unknown.
