Emily Hollander, a shy, recently divorced woman, lives in a Brooklyn Heights apartment. Andrea Glassen, her next-door neighbor, develops a disturbing fixation on Emily and begins watching her from afar.

One night, a man forces his way into Emily's apartment and subjects her to a bizarre assault, making her perform sounds of erotic satisfaction and recording them. The traumatizing attack leaves Emily terrified and determined to seek safety. She reports the incident to the police.

Emily reports the attack to the police, and during their interview, Andrea stops by to comfort her. Andrea's appearance feels supportive, but there are hints of something more complicated beneath.

Emily decides to move to an apartment in Manhattan seeking safety after the attack. The move marks a fresh start, but the fear remains as she tries to settle in a new city.

As Emily is packing to move, the same man tries to attack again. Andrea happens to be visiting and prevents him from entering Emily's new apartment.

The truth surfaces that Andrea orchestrated the assaults by hiring a taxi driver to obtain the recording. She obsessively listens to it and recites the lines while fantasizing about Emily. Her affection has warped into a dangerous manipulation.

Emily continues to view Andrea as a friend and begins a relationship with the police detective who responded to the case. The relationship unfolds without suspicion of Andrea's manipulation. The detective becomes a new source of support for Emily.

Andrea becomes increasingly unhinged and takes to spying on Emily through a telescope. The surveillance deepens her fixation and threatens Emily's sense of safety.

Emily unknowingly hails a taxi driven by the very man who assaulted her; he strikes up a conversation and she asks him to stop at a phone booth, as the police advised.

The taxi driver is arrested and confesses to the entire plot. Emily learns the full scope of Andrea's manipulation and deception.

Andrea professes her love for Emily, but Emily slaps her and declares that they will never speak again. The confrontation marks a decisive break from Andrea.

With the ordeal over, Emily greets the detective at her front door. The moment hints at a possible new beginning and a safer future.
