The whole story of Watcher (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

American couple Julia and Francis make the bold decision to move to Bucharest, settling into an apartment that boasts a large picture window. However, their new life takes a dark turn when Julia begins to see a man lurking in a window across the street. With Francis working long hours, Julia's anxiety escalates as the mysterious figure continues to watch her day in and day out.

Adding to her distress, local media report on a serial killer dubbed "the Spider," who brutally decapitates young women. One day, Julia becomes convinced that she is being followed while walking in the city. She manages to escape from a nearby market, but when they return to review the security footage with Francis, they find it offers no clarity.

In an attempt to regain her sense of safety, Julia befriends her neighbor, Irina, who reveals that her boyfriend, Cristian, gifted her a pistol for protection. That very night, Julia decides to wave at the man in the window, who shockingly waves back, further deepening her suspicions. Alarmed, she calls the police. When an officer accompanies Francis to talk to the man, they learn he is called Daniel Weber.

Determined to learn more, Julia follows Daniel to a strip club where he works as a janitor, only to be spotted by Irina, who works there as a dancer. Unfortunately, Irina knows nothing about Daniel. Later that night, Julia hears a strange noise from Irina's apartment and convinces the landlady to let her in, but they find no trace of her friend. Meanwhile, Francis tries to reassure Julia that her fears are unfounded, especially since “the Spider” has been caught.

The next day, Cristian shows up looking for Irina, who has mysteriously gone missing. They attempt to confront Daniel, but he doesn’t answer his door. Later on, Julia gathers the courage to knock, but is met only by an elderly man. That same night, a police officer arrives at their home with Daniel, who strangely accuses Julia of stalking him—a claim the officer dismisses as a misunderstanding.

Feeling isolated and dismissed, Julia joins Francis at a company party only to overhear him joking about her fears with his colleagues. Enraged, she storms out and boards a nearly empty subway train, where she is confronted by Daniel once more. He attempts to explain his odd behavior, claiming that he leads a dull life caring for his father. However, Julia notices something horrifying: the outline of what seems to be a severed head in his shopping bag.

Returning home in a panic, she is soon distracted by music coming from Irina's apartment. Upon entering, she makes a gruesome discovery—Irina’s headless corpse. Before she can react, Daniel smothers her with a plastic bag, knocking her unconscious. When Julia regains her senses, Daniel chillingly recounts how he murdered Irina and managed to hide when Julia and the landlady entered. Hearing Francis arrive next door, Julia tries to scream for help, but Daniel responds by slicing her throat.

Desperate, Francis calls Julia’s cell phone, the ringing of which echoes ominously from Irina’s apartment. He recognizes danger when he sees Daniel leaving but is met with shock as Julia, now covered in blood, emerges from the apartment wielding Irina’s pistol. In a frantic act of survival, she shoots Daniel multiple times, ultimately bringing an end to his terror. As the chaos unfolds, she locks eyes with Francis, leaving an unforgettable impression of horror and survival in the aftermath of their nightmarish encounter.

Watcher Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Watcher (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Daniel wave back when Julia waves at him?

When Julia defiantly waves at the man watching her from across the street, Daniel waves back, an act that confirms his fixation on her rather than dismissing it as coincidence. This moment shatters any hope Julia had that she was imagining the surveillance. It signals that Daniel has been deliberately watching her and chooses to engage, escalating her fear from paranoia to justified alarm.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Julia notices Daniel consistently at his window watching her apartment, establishing his pattern of observation before this direct interaction.

Q2

Why do the police dismiss Julia's complaints about Daniel?

The police dismiss Julia's concerns because Daniel presents himself as a normal, elderly man when they interview him alongside Francis. His calm demeanor and the fact that he owns the apartment create an appearance of legitimacy. Additionally, the police are occupied with the ongoing Spider serial killer case, making them dismissive of what they perceive as a domestic dispute or overactive imagination from an anxious foreigner.

Q3

What happens to Irina in Watcher?

Irina is murdered by Daniel Weber. After Julia hears strange noises from Irina's apartment and investigates with the landlady, they find no one. Later, Julia discovers Irina's decapitated corpse in the apartment. Daniel had killed her and hidden when the others entered, then later attacked Julia when she returned alone to investigate further.

Foreshadowing: Irina vanishes after giving Julia her contact information, and Cristian arrives searching for her, establishing her disappearance before the body is found.

Q4

Is Daniel the Spider serial killer?

No, Daniel is not the Spider. The Spider is an entirely separate serial killer who has been decapitating young women throughout Bucharest, and the news explicitly reports that the Spider has been caught by the time Julia finds Irina's body. Daniel is simply a stalker who becomes a murderer, copying the Spider's method of decapitation when he kills Irina, likely to throw off suspicion or because he's obsessed with the killings.

Foreshadowing: The Spider case dominates local news, creating an atmosphere of fear that makes Julia's warnings seem hysterical rather than credible.

Q5

Why does Francis dismiss Julia's warnings about Daniel?

Francis dismisses Julia's concerns because he rationalizes her anxiety as exaggerated paranoia, possibly stemming from adjustment to a new city. He works long hours and wants to believe their new life in Bucharest is positive. His dismissal is also self-serving, he jokes about her fears at a company party, revealing he finds her terror embarrassing rather than valid. This gaslighting leaves Julia isolated at the exact moment she most needs support.

Q6

How does Julia discover Irina's body?

Julia hears music coming from Irina's apartment, which strikes her as strange since Irina has been missing. Using the landlady's spare key, Julia enters and discovers Irina's headless corpse on the floor. The horror escalates when Daniel, who had been hiding inside, attacks Julia from behind and suffocates her with a plastic bag.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Julia hears a strange noise from Irina's apartment and the landlady confirms Irina is missing, building dread before the discovery.

Q7

What does Julia see in Daniel's bag on the subway?

When Julia confronts Daniel on the subway, he attempts to explain his behavior by claiming he lives a dull life caring for his elderly father. However, Julia notices the distinct outline of what appears to be a severed head inside his shopping bag, confirming her worst fears that she is being stalked by a dangerous murderer.

Foreshadowing: The Spider's decapitation method has been widely reported in news throughout the film, making this detail immediately recognizable to Julia.

Q8

How does Julia manage to survive and kill Daniel?

When Daniel approaches, Julia shoots him multiple times in desperate self-defense, killing him. Francis arrives as the chaos unfolds, and Julia emerges covered in blood, having survived the attack through sheer will and the availability of Irina's weapon.

Q9

Why does Daniel accuse Julia of stalking him?

When police visit Daniel's apartment with Julia's concerns, Daniel flips the narrative and accuses Julia of stalking him, a classic manipulation tactic. This reversal makes Julia appear unstable and mentally imbalanced to the authorities, causing them to dismiss her complaints as the ranting of an obsessive woman rather than taking her fears seriously.

Q10

What does the final look between Julia and Francis signify?

The final moment shows Julia, covered in blood and traumatized, locking eyes with Francis as she stands over Daniel's body. This haunting look signifies the irreversible damage to their relationship, the terror Julia experienced was real, but Francis's dismissal and mockery left her to face a monster alone. Rather than relief or comfort, the ending conveys deep psychological trauma and a fractured marriage that may never recover.

Foreshadowing: Francis's earlier dismissal at the party and his failure to believe Julia foreshadow this emotional rupture.

Read the full ending explained

Julia’s ordeal culminates in a tense and tragic confrontation. After discovering that Daniel Weber, the seemingly harmless old man from the neighborhood, is actually the notorious serial killer known as The Spider, Julia recognizes him in Irina’s apartment. Despite her warnings, no one believes her, and Daniel captures her. In the final moments, Julia screams for help, but the neighbors ignore her again, illustrating the indifference of the community. Daniel then slits her throat to silence her, leaving her bleeding on the floor. Just as he prepares to leave, Julia manages to crawl toward a gun in Irina’s apartment, but she faints from blood loss. Believing she is dead, Daniel leaves. However, Francis, Julia’s husband, arrives just in time — earlier, he had seen Daniel leaving Irina’s place and recognized him. In a desperate act of self-preservation, Julia manages to shoot and kill Daniel, preventing him from continuing his killing spree. At the very end, Julia’s fate remains uncertain; the film concludes with her battered and bloodied face, leaving it unclear whether she survives or not.

This ambiguous ending suggests that Julia, having faced the trauma and horror firsthand, may be forever changed. She might choose to leave Bucharest behind and return to America, possibly breaking away from her marriage after her ordeal. Her silent, intense gaze in the closing shot hints at a future of healing or perhaps a desire for retribution. Ultimately, Julia's experience highlights her resilience and her transformation from a paranoid observer to a survivor who takes matters into her own hands. The film leaves us with the impression that she has become a new kind of hero—one forged in the darkest moments and driven to stay vigilant against unseen threats.
