Sarah’s story begins with her recent move to Los Angeles, a city she hopes will be the place where she gains independence and pursues her passion for fashion and costume design. She quickly begins searching for an apartment and successfully secures a cozy one-bedroom unit in a seemingly friendly neighborhood complex that houses around 30 residents. As she settles in, Sarah quickly bonds with some of her neighbors, most notably Jerry, the apartment manager, Naomi Grossman, who appears friendly and helpful. She also befriends Brian, her neighbor played by Giles Matthey, and Edie, an elderly lady who adds a touch of warmth to the community.

However, soon after moving in, Sarah starts experiencing difficulty sleeping, plagued by loud noises at night that disrupt her rest. This sleep deprivation takes a toll on her, causing her to become lethargic and forget important commitments such as submitting her portfolio for her course. She confides in her trusted friend and co-worker, Lisa, who offers comfort during this stressful time. One summer evening, during a neighborhood barbeque, a resident named Lester. (played by Clayton Hoff) recommends The Power of Community by Charles D. Ellerby, a book that promises to foster unity and strength among its readers. Sarah politely declines this suggestion, unaware of what is to come.

As nights grow more restless, Sarah finds herself unable to sleep and, during one such night, she is unexpectedly attacked and drugged by Brian and other residents, rendering her unconscious. When she awakens, she finds herself confined in a sealed-off room, and Jerry and Brian reveal disturbing news: all the residents in the complex are part of a secret cult, and she has been chosen as a new member. The cult was founded three decades earlier by a man named Charles D. Ellerby, whose book, The Power of Community, outlines four core principles that guide their lives. Jerry (possibly played by Taylor Nichols) and Brian have cut her off entirely from the outside world, ensuring that no one can rescue her now that she is trapped in their growing cult.

Sarah undergoes a grueling initiation process, a tradition that every cult member before her endured. The procedure is physically and emotionally torturous, meant to test her loyalty. Once she survives, she is handed a copy of The Power of Community and is instructed to study it thoroughly. Her tasks also include marrying Lester, monitoring the residents via CCTV, and preparing meals for the children—duties that serve to deepen her inside her forced new role.

Initially resistant, Sarah begins to suffer from brainwashing, as the cult promises her a sense of belonging, purpose, and protection from her fears and loneliness. Her mind gradually shifts from skepticism to acceptance. The process culminates when she is branded with the cult’s symbol after passing a lie detector test that confirms her sincerity and commitment. This marks her transformation into a dedicated member of the community, with her individuality subsumed into the collective identity.

Later, the cult unexpectedly reopens its doors to potential new members through an “open house.” During this event, Sarah recognizes Lisa (played by [Nicole Brydon Bloom]), who has come to see what the cult is about. Overwhelmed by the realization that Jerry has chosen Lisa as the next initiate—she fears Lisa may be too strong-willed to be easily converted—Sarah desperately tries to warn her. During the harrowing and forced initiation of Lisa, Sarah reveals her true feelings about the cult, warning her friend that joining will change her life forever for the better, but in a darker, more controlling way.

The situation escalates when Lisa begins to see through the cult’s veneer and attempts to escape with Sarah. Their plan, however, is thwarted—Lisa is tragically shot dead by Jerry in the process. Determined to break free herself, Sarah seizes Jerry’s gun during the chaos and fights back against her captors. She manages to kill Jerry and Brian, who try to prevent her escape, and rushes out of the apartment complex into the streets, believing she is finally free.

Yet, the true extent of her predicament is revealed when Sarah notices that all the surrounding houses belong to CDE residences—an abbreviation for Charles D. Ellerby—and that their logo matches the cult’s symbol. An alarm blares across the entire neighborhood, revealing that she is still within the cult’s territory, which is controlled by Ellerby’s foundation. Realizing that she is not truly free but now the target of her former captors, Sarah runs desperately down the street, determined to escape from the clutches of the dangerous cult once and for all.
