In 2047, the world is dominated by a handful of powerful corporations, and more than three-quarters of humanity—the Connected—spend the majority of their lives inside sprawling online verses. Politicians keep the masses placid by maintaining the spectacle of endless play, while the real world outside grows increasingly neglected. After 148 gamers are killed in a virus attack carried out by the terrorist group Necromancers, Dina, Jane Badler, hires the shadow operative Nash, Mike Dopud, to track down the attackers and bring them to justice.
Nash spends half of his life online and is haunted by the death of his love, Helena, Audrey Giacomini. To uncover the truth, he turns to Morel, Helena’s brother, a brilliant hacker, and together they dig into the mystery behind the virus. Morel, played by Maximilien Poullein, becomes a crucial ally as the pair try to pull security video from Interpol servers, while Synternis tries to cover up the incident to shield itself from scrutiny.
As the investigation unfolds, Nash infiltrates a Necromancer cell by taking over the online avatar of one of their members. He discovers that the Necromancers intend to pull people out of the verses by any means necessary, a plan aimed at breaking the line between digital life and reality. Morel’s hacking draws Interpol’s attention, and the authorities begin to close in on him.
The plot thickens when Camylle, Kaya Blocksage, the Necromancers’ ruthless leader, ambushes Nash at his apartment. She reveals a provocative claim: Synternis is responsible for Helena’s death because they were the first to develop the virus capable of killing players online, and Helena herself was supposedly a mole inside the Necromancers. Camylle invites Nash to join a bold mission—to inject the virus into a Synternis server at headquarters, with the goal of shutting down all verses and forcing people to confront the real world.
Nash wrestles with the moral implications of freeing a population that may resist the change, and whether forcing freedom is wise at all. Before they can stand up the plan, a furious mob lynches the Necromancers, tearing at the mystery from every corner. Dina severs all ties with Nash, insisting he was misled; she also claims that the virus killing players was actually the Necromancers’ doing, and that Helena was working for Synternis from within the Necromancers. The truth remains murky, leaving Nash to wonder whom to trust and what memory to believe.
Unable to reconcile the competing narratives, Nash leans into his alternate reality, becoming one of the Connected and using his wealth to add features and comforts to his online avatar. He contends that his brain cannot reliably distinguish real from virtual, so the online life feels as real as the world outside.
