The story unfolds in a near-future where powerful corporations dominate society and the majority of humanity lives inside sprawling online verses called the Connected. The real world outside is neglected as people chase perpetual play and distraction. Key locations include Nash's apartment, Interpol server facilities, and the Synternis headquarters as the conspiracy unfurls.

The Connected verses blur the line between real life and simulation, forcing characters to confront what is real. Nash's half-online existence shows the personal costs of living between two worlds.
