Against this backdrop, Charles Cholmondeley proposes an audacious operation drawn from the Trout Memo—a plan to send a dead body ashore with forged documents that would mislead the Germans about Allied intentions.

The team pushes forward with the help of Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming, who becomes part of the operation’s planning. To seed legitimacy, they acquire the body of Glyndwr Michael, a vagrant who died under unclear circumstances, and rebrand him as Major William Martin, Royal Marines, complete with a backstory and forged identification photos. Meanwhile, back in London, a specialist unravels a crucial clue when Martin’s personal items resurfaced—the documents have been tampered with, a discovery that raises the possibility that Germany itself has retrieved the altered papers. This twist fuels a fragile sense of optimism within the operation, as counterintelligence hints that the ruse may have found its mark.

Jean’s safety becomes a focal point as Teddy, a club waiter with questionable loyalties, threatens her under the assumption that she knows more than she should. She reveals that Major Martin’s travels were under an alias, but that some of the information they carry is genuine. Montagu and Cholmondeley wrestle with the implications: could an internal German leak or a misdirection threaten the mission’s success? They tentatively conclude that Colonel Alexis von Roenne, who controls intelligence for the German Army High Command, may have sent Teddy to verify information so that Roenne could undermine Hitler’s plans. This suspends the need to reveal all, and Jean, seeking greater safety and purpose, accepts a position with Special Operations and eventually leaves London.

The timing aligns with a major Allied milestone: the invasion of Sicily, launched on 10 July. The campaign proceeds with a balance of limited casualties and steadier progress than feared, and the German defenders withdraw as the beaches hold. The operation’s outcome provides a sense of vindication for Montagu and Cholmondeley, who acknowledge their uneasy alliance with a quiet, almost bashful humor—Montagu even offers to buy Cholmondeley a drink at eight in the morning, a rare moment of camaraderie after the tension that preceded the operation’s success.

In its epilogue, the film traces the personal afterlives of those involved. Montagu is reunited with Iris after the war, while Jean marries a soldier and starts anew. Hester continues to serve as Director of the Admiralty Secretarial Unit, maintaining a steadier hand in the shadows of espionage, and Cholmondeley remains with MI5 for years, eventually marrying and traveling widely. The identity at the heart of the deception—Major William Martin—remains a matter of historical curiosity until 1997, when Glyndwr Michael’s name is finally linked to the man buried under the false identity in Spain, and his epitaph is updated to honor the truth.
