Turn Left, Turn Right

Two people live in buildings directly next to each other, separated only by a wall. The setting establishes proximity and barrier without ever letting them truly connect. The film frames their shared space as both intimate and isolating.

John Liu, a violinist, accepts a ride home after a gig from June. June flirts aggressively, making him uncomfortable and prompting him to jump out of the car and sprint toward his building. He ends the encounter eager to avoid further advances.

Eve Choi, translating a horror novel, becomes frightened that her home is haunted. The next day she notices a scary-looking tree to the right of her building and resolves to avoid that side. The fear creates a palpable sense of danger in her daily life.

John and Eve meet by chance at the park fountain when John helps pick up papers. They discover they had met years earlier on a school trip to the amusement park. They exchange phone numbers in the moment, then part as a rainstorm begins.

That night both are elated to have reconnected yet fall ill with the flu due to the earlier rainstorm. John's medication is expired and Eve forgets to take hers in her excitement. The illness keeps them home, delaying any attempt to contact each other.

The next day the numbers they exchanged become unreadable because of water damage. With only a few digits readable, they call various numbers; one hopeful contact is a restaurant where Ruby works. Ruby's delivery leads her to them and she begins to suspect the two are trying to find each other.

Ruby delivers to John and instantly falls for him. To keep him away from the neighboring apartment, she fabricates an old-lady resident living there. Her deception blends affection with misdirection as she helps connect the two by encouraging their relationship.

The flu worsens and both end up hospitalized; Ruby visits John, while Eve is admitted by ambulance and treated by Dr. Hu. Dr. Hu, a former classmate of Eve who has a crush on her, convinces Eve that it must be fate and checks her into hospital to receive the best care. He initially discharges John but changes his mind after Ruby argues that John is more ill.

Before discharge, John and Eve entrust their home keys to Ruby and Dr. Hu to set up voicemail at their respective homes. They hope to catch the other’s call even while separated. This small gesture establishes a practical tether between their worlds.

After discharge, John and Eve discover Dr. Hu and Ruby have moved into each of their apartments. Although they respect the new romance, John's and Eve's feelings are hurt as they watch others move into what felt like their own space. The couple share pictures revealing how many places they missed finding each other, a playful yet painful twist.

Frustrated by missed connections, John and Eve decide to take jobs abroad to change their chances of reuniting. They cling to the notion that fate will bring them together again, even as separation looms. The plan to leave marks a new attempt to pursue each other from across borders.

On the day they are about to depart, an earthquake destroys the wall between their buildings. The barrier that kept them apart collapses, allowing them to finally find each other. They embrace, realizing love has bridged distance, fear, and time.
