In the late 1970s, a modest town hides a tightly‑run training camp that promises spiritual awakening while enforcing a relentless regimen of chanting, low‑calorie meals and sleep deprivation. The atmosphere is both seductive and oppressive, a place where collective discipline blurs the line between faith and manipulation, and where the promise of purpose feels as intoxicating as it is constraining. The film immerses the viewer in this claustrophobic world, letting the subtle hum of rituals and the starkness of the camp’s diet set a mood that is simultaneously hopeful and foreboding.

At the center of this environment is David, a twenty‑something schoolteacher still reeling from a recent breakup. Seeking meaning, he steps into the camp’s embrace and quickly becomes caught in its methodical brain‑washing process. The daily grind of rehearsed songs, enforced humility and a strict hierarchy chips away at his former self, turning his curiosity into a hollow conformity. Through David’s eyes we feel the quiet erosion of identity, the way ordinary doubts are drowned out by the ever‑present chant of “belonging” that the community offers.

Watching from the outside are people who know David’s true nature—Larry, a close friend; Morley and Esther, fellow alumni who have glimpsed the camp’s darker side; and Patrick, the charismatic leader whose justification for the group’s harsh practices hints at a twisted moral logic. When the strain becomes undeniable, Larry, along with a network of concerned relatives and friends, turns to a professional deprogrammer, Linc Strunk, to try and pry David away from the grip of the cult. Their uneasy alliance underscores the desperate hope that love and loyalty might outshine the suffocating doctrine.

The film balances stark realism with an unsettling psychological tension, inviting the audience to contemplate how easily a yearning for belonging can be weaponized. It asks whether community can become cage, and whether the bonds of family and friendship can illuminate a path back to self before the shadows consume it entirely.
