In 1973, we follow the story of Lena, played by Emma Watson, an adventurous Lufthansa flight attendant who is deeply in love with Daniel, portrayed by Daniel Brühl, a West German journalist and activist living in Chile. Their peaceful reunification in Santiago quickly turns into a nightmare as a military coup begins to unfold, a coup that sees supporters of the ousted President Salvador Allende targeted ruthlessly by the military, under the command of General Augusto Pinochet.

As fate would have it, Daniel is soon captured by Pinochet’s secret police, DINA. During an unfortunate line-up, he is recognized by a masked informant, and we learn of the harrowing conditions he faces as he is whisked away to a secret location where he is tortured mercilessly. Devastated but determined, Lena embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue him. However, her efforts are thwarted when Daniel’s fellow revolutionaries inform her that he has been taken to a notorious place called Colonia Dignidad, a secretive cult-like organization masquerading as a charitable entity.

This bizarre enclave, run by the manipulative Paul Schäfer, played by Michael Nyqvist, is not what it seems; it is a dark and repressive community with a blend of Baptist tenets, Nazism, and extreme anti-Communism. Against her better judgment and advised by Amnesty International that escape might be futile, Lena infiltrates the colony seeking Daniel, only to be confronted with a harsh and oppressive reality. The camp administrator, Gisela, played by Richenda Carey, is quick to seize Lena’s passport upon her arrival.

Within the confines of Colonia, Lena finds herself subjected to endless labor and psychological torment. She is forced to work in the fields under harsh conditions and participates in coerced confessions with Paul. Although she meets other young women like Doro, voiced by Jeanne Werner, who shares heartbreaking tales of lost love, the oppressive atmosphere is stifling. At the same time, we see Daniel enduring brutal treatment, left in disfigurement yet plotting to escape.

As Lena navigates daily life in the camp, she witnesses horrendous acts fueled by Paul’s paranoia as he accuses Doro of harboring evil and subjects her to public punishment. Time passes, and two months into her captivity, after witnessing a rally, she finally encounters Daniel at a mixed event where emotional ties are rekindled amidst the oppressive grip of the cult.

The couple uncovers the dark secrets of Colonia Dignidad—its role as a political prison, trafficking haven, and torture site operated in conjunction with DINA. In a twist of fate, they find an ally in nurse Ursel, who discloses the shocking truth that Gisela is her mother, born within the confines of this dreadful camp. Escaping becomes a race against time as Daniel discovers a network of tunnels with a potential route out, but he realizes they are blocked.

Despite the challenges, the couple plans an escape within 24 hours when Daniel learns he has been marked for a sinister poison gas test. Lena and Ursel work meticulously to devise a plan, but the stakes grow higher as Gisela uncovers incriminating photographs captured by Daniel that could spell disaster for any associated with the colony.

When escape becomes a real possibility, they find themselves caught in a web of betrayal and violence. Ursel is tragically killed during their flight, yet Lena and Daniel manage to reach the West German embassy, only to be stalled by the embassy staff who are complicit with the regime. With sheer determination, Lena calls upon her friend, Roman, a Lufthansa pilot, and together they attempt a daring escape, finally breaking free from the horrors of Colonia Dignidad.

In the shadow of this harrowing experience, the couple learns that few have ever escaped the clutches of the cult, and although they get away with damning evidence against the organization, the fight for justice continues long after they leave. Paul Schäfer would eventually face trial, sentenced for his crimes, but the scars of their experience linger as a poignant reminder of the relentless struggle for freedom and truth.
