Dead Reckoning (1946) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Dead Reckoning (1946), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Leaving a church, Father Logan, James Bell, meets Captain ‘Rip’ Murdock, Humphrey Bogart, who needs to unburden himself about a recent maze of danger and deceit before unseen enemies catch up. The scene slips into a tense flashback that fills in the recent past with a noir-tinged thread of wartime friendship and a crime that spirals out of control.

Just after World War II, two close friends, Murdock and Sergeant Johnny Drake, are pulled away from Paris and ordered to march toward Washington, D.C. Drake, on the verge of a high honor—the Medal of Honor—carries a secret that casts a long shadow: Murdock learns that Drake will receive the award while Murdock himself is cited with the Distinguished Service Cross. Drake, however, bolts in the moments before photographers can record the ceremony, and Murdock, angry and determined, goes AWOL to uncover the truth. His hunt leads him south to Gulf City, a humid crossroads of crime and luck, where he discovers a grim headline: Drake’s body has been found, burned and in a car crash, a murder that may have been staged to look like an accident.

In Gulf City, Murdock discovers Drake had enlisted under a false name to dodge a murder charge tied to a wealthy man named Chandler. Drake was entangled with Chandler’s glamorous wife, Coral Chandler, Lizabeth Scott, whose presence in the case complicates every lead. Murdock’s investigations bring him to a nightclub where he questions Louis Ord, George Chandler, a witness at Drake’s trial. Ord hints at a letter Drake entrusted him to deliver to Murdock, a clue that could unlock the entire conspiracy. In the smoky club, Murdock also meets Coral and Martinelli, the proprietor of the venue, and a dangerous game unfolds as Coral’s gambling habit surfaces—she losses heavily at roulette, but Murdock helps her recover by turning the dice in his favor at craps, a move that entangles him further with the couple.

The night’s clues grow colder: Ord is found dead in a plot that makes it look like a suicide, planted in Murdock’s hotel room to throw the police off his trail. Lieutenant Kincaid, Charles Cane, arrives at Murdock’s door after an anonymous tip, intensifying the sense that someone is always one step ahead. With Ord gone and the trail growing fainter, Murdock teams up with Coral again, hoping she holds the key to the letter and the motive behind the murder—only to discover that the trail leads to Martinelli’s private office.

Inside Martinelli’s setting, Murdock finds the safe already opened, and a trap awaits him until he’s knocked unconscious by an unseen assailant. He awakens with a scent of jasmine in the air, the same perfume Coral wears, and learns from Martinelli that the killer’s plan goes deeper than a simple crime of passion. Krause, Marvin Miller, a thug, roughs up Murdock to pry loose the content of the coded message in the letter, but a quick escape—prompted by an encounter with Lt. Kincaid—pulls him back into the fight as the truth begins to spool outward.

Back in the present, Murdock’s mistrust of Coral intensifies. He confronts her at her apartment, where she maintains her innocence but finally admits that she killed Chandler in self-defense. She confesses she went to Martinelli for guidance and handed him the murder weapon to dispose of, but Martinelli has been blackmailing her ever since. A dangerous romance now knits itself with a darker motive: Coral has secrets that threaten to topple everyone around them.

As their feelings deepen, Murdock resolves to leave town with Coral—but only after forcing a confession from the man who knows too much. In Martinelli’s office, he detonates napalm grenades to compel Martinelli to reveal the incriminating weapon and the truth about Coral’s ties to Chandler. Martinelli, it seems, married Coral and kept the marriage hidden; Drake’s supposed murder was a ruse to keep Coral in line and to secure Chandler’s fortune for himself.

Terror spikes as Krause jumps through a window to escape the inferno. Murdock retrieves the weapon that can prove Coral’s guilt and drives Martinelli toward the police, intending to hand him over as a final reckoning. But the moment Martinelli steps into the corridor, Coral fires, killing him and sealing her fate in the process.

With the net of lies closing in, Murdock and Coral steal away in a car. He accuses her of trying to destroy him, while she retaliates in kind. The two speed toward an uncertain future, but disaster strikes as Coral shoots Murdock and drives headlong into a tree. The crash leaves Murdock alive but Coral mortally wounded, the case crashing to an unresolved echo in the night.

In the end, the truth about Drake’s death, Chandler’s murder, and the web of blackmail strands remains tangled—an intricate, fatal mosaic of ambition, love, and betrayal that keeps the memory of those days haunted in the minds of all who survived them.
