The Yards

As Leo Handler steps into his mother Val’s home in Queens, the air crackles with excitement as a surprise party celebrates his recent parole. This event underscores the deep bond and steadfast love that Val has consistently shown him. Among the attendees is Willie Gutierrez, Erica Soltz’s boyfriend, who expresses sincere gratitude for Leo’s sacrifices made during his time in prison, implying that Leo shielded his friends from facing dire consequences. In appreciation of Val’s kindness, Leo decides to take a job with Frank Olchin, Erica’s stepfather, at his railway car repair business, Electric Rail Corporation.

The day following his reunion, Leo reports to the Electric Rail Corporation’s Maspeth offices, where Frank proposes to sponsor him for a two-year machinist program. Eager to begin, Leo’s enthusiasm is dampened by his need for a quick paycheck, leading him to ask if Willie can also join the company. Unfortunately, Frank refuses the request, prompting a discussion over drinks at a local bar where Willie shares his own frustrations about Frank’s failure to help him secure a position in the machinist program.

Their conversation soon veers towards the controversial contract system that governs subway repairs in Brooklyn Borough Hall. After a tense hearing, Hector Gallardo, co-owner of Weltech Corporation, approaches Willie with a tempting offer to abandon Frank’s firm for his own minority-owned business. However, Willie turns down the offer, suggesting instead that Leo accompany him on a covert trip to Roosevelt Island. Here, Willie bribes an official in charge of awarding contracts, setting off a chain of events that will soon spiral beyond their control.

Under the cover of night, Willie guides Leo to the Sunnyside repair yards. There, his crew engages in sabotage, intentionally ruining Weltech’s work quality to undermine their chance at lucrative contracts. Leo watches as the crew manipulates train couplings, but their plan takes a dark turn when Willie greases the palm of yard master Elliot Gorwitz with Knicks tickets. They are confronted and forced to clear the area due to Weltech’s own bribery attempts, finally triggering an alarm that draws the attention of police officer Jerry Rifkin.

Panicking over the thought of returning to prison, Leo tries to flee, but the situation escalates when Rifkin resorts to violence with his nightstick, leaving Leo with no choice but to defend himself, inadvertently rendering the officer unconscious. In the chaos, Leo witnesses something horrific: Willie’s heinous act as he fatally stabs Gorwitz. The reality of their precarious situation intensifies as they grapple with the consequences of their actions.

With Rifkin incapacitated in the hospital, the crew devises a sinister plan to eliminate him before he can awaken and identify Leo as the assailant. The stakes couldn’t be higher; if Rifkin regains consciousness and divulges Leo’s identity, it would be their undoing. As the plot unravels, Rifkin unexpectedly stirs to life, igniting a frantic game of hide and seek between him and Leo as law enforcement mobilizes a manhunt, convinced that Leo is also responsible for Gorwitz’s murder.

Simultaneously, chaos erupts in Val’s apartment as police raid the place, forcing her to confront the aftermath of a near-fatal heart attack. Despite Willie’s cautions urging Leo to maintain a low profile, Leo defies the odds by visiting Val, only to find himself ensnared in a murky web of betrayal. Following the shocking revelation of Willie’s true role in Gorwitz’s murder, Erica severes her romantic ties with him, adding an extra layer of complexity to the already turbulent situation.

Meanwhile, Frank’s relentless pursuit of power blinds him to Erica’s desperate cries for assistance as he maneuvers through a murky landscape of corruption and deceit. With his life in jeopardy, Leo turns to Gallardo, offering to surrender to authorities in hopes of obtaining protection from impending doom. As Leo testifies at a public hearing examining the rail yard incident and contract malfeasance, Frank and Gallardo engage in a high-stakes negotiation, attempting to reset the contract distribution under Queens Borough President Arthur Mydanick.

Willie, consumed by his demons, makes a last-ditch effort to rekindle his relationship with Erica, revealing chilling secrets that Frank has about their past. Under mounting pressure, Erica sets off the silent house alarm, and Willie’s efforts to calm her down only cause her to retreat in fear. In a tragic accident, she falls from the second-floor landing, leading to catastrophic consequences for all involved.

In the wake of her death, Frank makes a grave promise to Leo: he will help if Leo agrees to stay silent about the insidious corruption permeating The Yards. Leo, however, remains steadfast, rejecting Frank’s hollow assurances. Instead, he resolves to testify against those accountable for the political corruption that has haunted them, ultimately departing from Queens on the elevated train and leaving a legacy of justice and reckoning in his wake.
