Tom Cochrane, Leo Penn — high on cocaine and covered with blood — is picked up by the police and briefly questioned by Inspector Shannon, Douglas Fowley, and Detective Taylor, Harry Strang, but he manages to slip away.

His girlfriend Lois Walter, Teala Loring, defies her guardian Jim Grossett, [Charles Arnt(/actor/charles-arnt)], by offering support and joining Tom and his police-officer brother-in-law Mac McLaine, Robert Armstrong, in trying to clear Tom of a possible murder charge.

With only fragments of memory, Tom recalls that he met a man in a bar and later attended a party. The search leads them to the party’s setting in the apartment of the Sindells—Mr. Ed Sindell John Harmon and Mrs. Sindell Iris Adrian—where they discover the body of a murdered girl in the apartment above.

As the investigation heats up, the police pick up Mac, while Tom follows Marie, Virginia Dale, and Mike, Jack Overman, tracing the killer’s moves.

Tragedy compounds the case when Joe is murdered for guiding Tom to the crime scene, and Marie—the woman hired by the killer to lure Tom to the apartment when the crime occurred—is choked to death, Virginia Dale.

Tom’s pursuit continues, and after a tense chase he is nearly trapped, but is saved at the last moment by Mike, Jack Overman.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why was Tom Cochrane covered in blood when picked up by police?

A.

Tom Cochrane was found covered in blood because he was high on cocaine and present at the scene of the murder, though he did not commit the crime. His fragmentary memory of the night suggests he was at a bar meeting a mysterious man before attending a party, but the drug-induced state left him confused about exactly what happened. The blood on his clothes was from the murdered girl, but he has no memory of the killing itself.

Q2

How did Tom Cochrane escape from the police station?

A.

During interrogation by Inspector Shannon and Detective Taylor, Tom Cochrane managed to slip away from custody despite being wounded and under the influence of cocaine. The exact method of his escape is not detailed in the summary, but his desperation to clear his name and his drug-fueled state gave him the motivation and erratic behavior needed to break free before the detectives could extract information about the murder.

Q3

Who killed the girl found in the apartment?

A.

The summary does not explicitly reveal the identity of the killer. The murdered girl was discovered in the apartment above the Sindells' residence, where Tom had been led after meeting a mysterious man at a bar. The investigation points to a conspiracy involving multiple players, Marie was hired by the killer to lure Tom to the apartment at the time of the crime, suggesting the real murderer had orchestrated the situation to frame Tom.

The killer specifically hired Marie to lure Tom to the apartment, indicating the murder was premeditated and Tom was targeted as a pawn.

Q4

Why was Joe murdered?

A.

Joe was murdered because he had guided Tom Cochrane to the crime scene, making him a liability to the killer. As the man Tom had met in the bar, Joe was the key link that could help reconstruct the events of the night and potentially identify the real murderer. By eliminating Joe, the killer removed a critical witness who could expose the conspiracy and the frame-up against Tom.

Joe had pointed Tom and Mac toward the party scene and where the crime occurred, directly threatening the killer's anonymity.

Q5

What happened to Marie and why was she killed?

A.

Marie was the woman hired by the killer to lure Tom Cochrane to the apartment where the murder took place. She was choked to death by the killer to silence her, as she knew too much about the conspiracy to frame Tom. Her death eliminated another loose end in the killer's plan, though her demise also provided Tom with crucial information about the mastermind's scheme.

Marie had been specifically hired to lure Tom to the apartment at the time of the crime, making her a dangerous witness.

Q6

Was Mike helping Tom or working with the killer?

A.

Mike was ultimately helping Tom Cochrane. Although he was one of the figures involved in luring Tom to the apartment during the murder, Mike proved to be an ally when he saved Tom at the last moment during the climactic chase. When Tom was nearly trapped by the killer, Mike intervened just in time, suggesting Mike may have been coerced into participating in the original scheme but chose to help Tom when it mattered most.

Mike was traced alongside Marie as part of the killer's moves, but his later intervention reveals he was not truly committed to the conspiracy.

Q7

What caused Tom Cochrane's memory loss of the murder night?

A.

Tom Cochrane's memory loss was caused by his heavy cocaine intoxication. The drug left him in a fragmentary, confused state where he could recall only disjointed pieces of the night, such as meeting a man in a bar and going to a party, but not the actual murder. This drug-induced amnesia made it extremely difficult for him to prove his innocence and forced him to piece together the timeline through external investigation.

Q8

Why was Mac McLaine arrested by the police?

A.

Mac McLaine, Tom Cochrane's police-officer brother-in-law, was arrested because the police considered him a suspect in the murder case. While Tom continued investigating outside the law, Mac was taken into custody at the police station. His arrest created a significant shift in the investigation, as Tom lost an ally and ally turned into a potential liability, forcing Tom to continue the investigation alone while his brother-in-law remained detained.

Q9

Why did Lois Walter defy her guardian to help Tom?

A.

Lois Walter defied her guardian Jim Grossett because she believed in Tom Cochrane's innocence and was determined to help clear his name despite the dangerous situation. Her relationship with Tom motivated her to join forces with his brother-in-law Mac, defying societal expectations and her guardian's wishes. This act of loyalty was crucial, as Lois became an integral part of the investigative team helping Tom.

Q10

How did Tom and Mac find the party location?

A.

Tom and Mac found the party location by following the fragmentary memories Tom had of meeting a mysterious man in a bar and later attending a party. They tracked down Joe, who had been in the bar with Tom, and Joe guided them toward the party scene. This lead took them to the Sindells' apartment building where they discovered the murdered girl's body in the apartment above.

Tom's memory of the bar encounter, though fragmented, contained the crucial clue that led to Joe and ultimately the crime scene.
