With a million dollars cash in the vault, Jim Osborne, a long-time bank employee who has risen to assistant bank manager in Los Angeles, faces a dangerous temptation: to steal from his own bank and flee the country. He learns that Brazil has a no extradition treaty with the United States, a detail that makes the leap seem possible if he can strike at the end of a Friday and slip away before the theft is discovered on Monday. Yet a busy week looms: the bank’s Saturday reopening season is about to begin, forcing him to act within the same week or risk waiting months for another chance.

He informs his wife, Laurie Osborne, that the bank is sending him to Rio de Janeiro on business and that she and their daughter should travel with him. He paints it as a spectacular career opportunity, having been chosen ahead of the usual candidate, and urges her not to speak of it. Laurie is enthusiastic but practical: their daughter will stay with Laurie’s mother, though Jim suggests he can fetch the child once the family is settled in Rio.

Armed with inside knowledge and a trusted position, he views the theft as a doable, time-sensitive heist. Yet travel logistics threaten to derail the plan: direct flights are oversubscribed, and rush passports and visas are required. What follows is a race of documents and schedules as the Osbornes chase a path to Brazil, only to miss a connection in New Orleans.

An airline employee, unsettled by Jim’s rushed manner and unusually heavy baggage, tips off a customs officer. The customs checks reveal the $1 million cash. The officer suspects something illicit but cannot reach Jim’s boss in time; he lets them go, but they are left on standby and the next flight is full, leaving them behind. They cannot reach Rio on Sunday.

Desperate, Jim checks into a hotel under a false name. Laurie discovers the deception when the desk clerk calls Jim by the alias, and she confronts him. Facing the truth, she decides not to be part of an illegal scheme and returns home to Los Angeles.

Back in a moment of clarity, Jim realizes his wife and child matter more than wealth. He calls with a plan to recover the stolen funds and return them to the bank before it opens, having used only their own money for travel, keeping the bank’s cash intact. He flies back and narrowly succeeds in replacing the money in the vault. The emotional toll leaves him exhausted, and his colleagues send him home sick, where he reunites with Laurie.
