Joe [Glenn Ford] is a dedicated police detective living a surprisingly luxurious lifestyle, despite earning a modest income. His wife Lisa, played by [Elke Sommer], is not only remarkably beautiful but also wealthy, which allows the couple to enjoy a high standard of living. However, their financial stability is threatened when their stock dividends decline in value, prompting Joe to seek additional liquid assets. Lisa, committed to maintaining her luxurious lifestyle, is unwilling to accept any reduction in their comforts. This financial pressure sets the stage for the movie’s unfolding drama.
The story takes a turn when Joe and his partner [Ricardo Montalbán], known as Pete, are assigned to investigate Dr. [Joseph Cotten]—a prominent and wealthy general practitioner, Dr. Van Tilden. Van Tilden reports that he shot an intruder, Phil Kenny, in his home, and the investigation reveals a complex web of motives and secrets. As Joe and Pete delve into the case, they examine a wall safe located on the doctor’s second floor, uncovering clues about a large sum of money. They also find Kenny nearby, still alive but wounded, and he confesses that he was after two bags of cash containing a staggering $500,000. Before dying, Kenny provides Joe with the safe’s combination, fueling Joe’s curiosity and suspicions.
Later that evening, while secretly shadowed by Pete, Joe visits Rosie (Rosalie), played by [Rita Hayworth], a bar waitress and his former lover. Rosie corroborates Kenny’s claim about the money, revealing that Kenny was after the massive sum. To help her escape trouble, Joe gives Rosie some money and advises her to leave town, but her failure to do so sets off a chain of tragic events that will impact everyone’s lives. Tragically, Rosie’s refusal to leave leads to her eventual murder, adding to the story’s layers of peril.
Meanwhile, Pete reveals that he’s interested in taking a share of the illegal gains, and Joe agrees to team up. Together, they plan a heist to steal the cash from Dr. Van Tilden’s safe. Their plan leads them to break into the doctor’s house, but as they execute their scheme, unexpected danger strikes. Van Tilden, who had claimed he was traveling to Acapulco, is actually waiting with an accomplice, Matthews, played by [Tom Reese]. As they spring their deadly trap, Pete is seriously wounded, and a fierce confrontation ensues. Despite the serious injuries, Joe manages to incapacitate Van Tilden and Matthews, helping Pete escape.
The narrative intensifies as Joe and Pete regroup at Joe’s house. They discover that one of the bags contains heroin, adding a dangerous twist to their illicit dealings. With Pete’s condition worsening and facing a life-threatening wound, Joe makes a critical decision—he contacts Van Tilden to negotiate medical treatment for Pete in exchange for the heroin, which the doctor agrees to deliver. Van Tilden shows up at Joe’s residence to provide medical assistance, but even after treatment, Pete succumbs to his injuries. In a desperate attempt to fulfill their agreement, Joe is forced to surrender the heroin to Van Tilden.
The situation escalates further when Matthews reappears, leading to a final, violent conflict. Despite his efforts, Joe is severely wounded during the chaos. As he lies injured, Lisa calls an ambulance but is stopped by Joe, who, in a moment of clarity, instructs her to call the police instead. With his last strength, Joe takes one final look at his luxurious surroundings, symbolizing both his downfall and the high costs of his choices. His wife, distraught, notifies the authorities as the screen fades to black, leaving his fate uncertain but reflecting the tragic cost of greed, corruption, and betrayal.
