Joe Moore leads a tight circle of professional thieves that includes Bobby Blane, Donnie “Pinky” Pincus, and Fran, his wife. In a New York City jewelry-store job, he cleverly lowers his guard by removing his mask to distract the last employee, a move that leaves his face captured on a security camera. Faced with the possibility of being identified, he decides to retire from crime and disappear aboard his sailboat with [Fran], seeking a quiet end to a high-pressure life.
This plan unsettles his fence, Mickey Bergman, who runs a garment business as a front. Bergman has poured money into the crew’s next caper and withholds payment to force them into a bigger score: robbing an airplane carrying a substantial shipment of gold. He also insists that his nephew, Jimmy Silk, join the crew. Joe accepts, but a web of shifting loyalties soon complicates the mission, especially as Jimmy’s interest in [Fran] grows and questions arise about whether Joe’s edge as a thief is fading.
While setting up the operation, a passing police officer briefly halts their progress. Joe and Bobby talk the officer into leaving, but an agitated Jimmy draws his gun before Pinky can stop him. Joe steels the group by manipulating Jimmy’s belief that Pinky didn’t destroy the getaway car’s fingerprints, a deceit that slackens the crew’s unity and spurs Bergman to demand they finish the job.
The plane heist unfolds as a sequence of misdirections. Pinky poses as a guard while Joe, Bobby, and Jimmy masquerade as airport personnel. They stage an emergency to halt the jet, load a van with stolen cargo, relocate it to a rented garage on the airport grounds, rebrand the vehicle, and arrange for a tow to disappear with their haul.
Betrayal then hits hard. Jimmy betrays the others to seize the gold—and [Fran]. He knocks out Joe and reveals that he understands the plan has shifted. Fran hurries away with Jimmy, while Bergman and his crew corner Joe aboard his sailboat, where they hold him at gunpoint and mistake the boat’s golden railings for the real treasure. Fran pleads with Bergman to spare Joe and escapes with Jimmy, leaving the others to their fates. In the ensuing kill-or-be-killed melee, Pinky is counted out, Bergman’s men fall, and Joe kills Bergman. Bobby then provides Joe with the address to send his share.
The last act centers on a tense, double-crossing standoff as Joe waits for Fran with a truck filled with black-painted rods. Fran, having flipped loyalties again, ambushes Joe with Jimmy and takes that truck. Joe slips into a second vehicle, only to have a hidden reveal unfold: a metal bar in the first truck scrapes the garage door, exposing gold beneath. Joe uncovers the truth by lifting a tarp in the truck bed to reveal the gold rods, then covers them again and drives away, the fate of the heist sealed in a daring finale.
