What are the main themes of The Rules of the Game?
The film centers on two interconnected themes: unreciprocated love and deception. André Jurieux's unrequited love for Christine drives much of the emotional turmoil, representing longing and emotional isolation. Meanwhile, deception runs through the weekend as characters hide motives and engage in manipulations, most notably Octave orchestrating encounters under the guise of friendship. These themes intersect during the masked ball, where identities blur and hidden truths surface.
