Love Stories (1997) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Love Stories (1997), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The four characters played by Jerzy Stuhr arrive at a single place at different times and in different vehicles: a college professor in his own car, a priest in a taxicab, an army officer in a government vehicle, and a prisoner in a police van with two officers. As the opening credits roll, the quartet moves through the same building, their paths brushing against one another in small, telling moments that hint at a shared fate.

In the professor’s thread, the story unfolds around the examination room. The professor collects the written exams of his students and is surprised to find Dominika Ostałowska Ewa Bielska has written on hers, “I love you.” He initially resists her advances, but he eventually yields. For a crucial oral exam with the dean, Ewa asks for the professor’s help because she claims she knows nothing. When the moment arrives, Ewa decides to resign, and the dean quips that this is Poland, not America, noting that he wouldn’t have been expelled for an affair with a student. The exchange exposes tensions around desire, power, and propriety within an academic setting, while hinting at the complexities that can ripple through the lives of both instructor and pupil.

The priestly thread follows a different rhythm. The priest sits in the confessional when a young girl arrives, claiming to be his daughter. Her story proves true: he recognizes her mother from Radom, years past. The girl recounts that her mother died six years earlier, yet she has come to confirm a family link. The girl eventually returns to the orphanage she escaped from, and the parish community wrestles with the idea of letting the priest go. In the end, the priest chooses to quit the church in order to become a father to his daughter, a decision that weighs tradition against personal responsibility and the longing to mend broken ties.

The military thread centers on Colonel Matałowski, a man whose home life feels carefully compartmentalized. He returns to a house where almost everything is locked away, including the fridge, underscoring a rift with his wife. An old flame, Tamara, reappears and the two share drinks while recalling their past letters. His superiors disapprove of the affair because Tamara is Russian, adding political tension to a private drama. Matałowski sees Tamara one last time as he drives her to the train station, choosing a path that acknowledges duty and loyalty while confronting enduring desire.

In the fourth thread, the prisoner Zdzisław Filip is convicted of trafficking heroin and sentenced to five years in prison plus a fine. As the police take him away, he tells his wife Kryśka to go to hell. Four years later, during a conjugal visit, Zdzisław taps on Kryśka’s back to direct her to buried cash. Kryśka discovers the money but, instead of using it to pay the fine, she attempts to flee the country. Zdzisław is upset but says he anticipated her choice; without the funds, he must endure two more years behind bars. The episode captures the strain between love, obligation, and the lure of escape.

Across these intertwined stories, all four characters eventually share a moment of convergence in a quiet, almost ritualized setting: they glimpse a man in an archives, and the professor and the colonel descend into a long corridor via a shared elevator, leaving them momentarily alone with their thoughts and consequences. In this way, the film threads together personal transgressions, moral compromises, and the stubborn pull of human connection, suggesting that choices made in isolation can echo across disparate lives until they meet in a single, unsettled place.
